I thought this video was very well edited. I can only say the video quality could have been better.

Your video was pretty good. My major complaints are the watermark and the video quality. The editing isn't the best I've seen, but was good (especially considering its your second video).

I've been to AB several years (this year was the first time I haven't been in 5 years I think) and I've never been impressed with the AMVs that make it to screening. Out of all the videos they show (don't remember exactly how many, but in the 20-30 range, I think), I would say normally around 5 should even be in the competition.

So yeah, point being this video is much, much better than most of the things I've seen at Anime Boston.

Well in my opinion this was very well edited, the talent when it comes to scene slection is obviously there.
All you need to do know is be more demanding with yourselve when it comes to video quality.
And i wonder why did you decide to call the video Memento, the movie is completelly the oposite

good luck with future projects!!!

I enjoyed it overall. I felt that there were too many white flash transitions. Those are nice to use to highlight the emotion, but over used can be a bit of an annoyance.

Very nice mood you've created in this piece!

I saw Memento at Anime Boston and had no complaints when it was announced this video won Best Editing. Whether anyone here agrees that it's "Best Editing" material is really neither here nor there, not only because only a handful of us actually saw every other competitor, but because I don't see how "This didn't deserve a best editing award" is constructive criticism.

Anyways, I am pleasantly surprised to learn this is your second video. As others have said, work on video quality and suchlike, which is probably one of the easiest ways to make sure your AMVs are able to measure up against all the others out there which don't possess such flaws. I will say that the flashes and fades were far, far less noticeable when I saw Memento at the convention...not sure why. I even remember (now that I'm watching this video again) thinking to myself how they were pretty well done and meshed well with the video/music. Hrm...I guess seeing them on a huge screen alters the experience, because I definitely feel they are jarring and a little excessive when viewed on a computer monitor. Hrm...interesting...

Congratulations on winning at AB!

I don't know how Anime Boston judges, but from the category title, "Best Editing" should have nothing to do with the sources themselves, but instead how they were put together by the editor. There is a separate category for Best of Show.

btw, either you've been hiding under a rock or you're new to anime. >_>

Quite a few Shinkai-based AMVs have been released and a good number of well edited videos using it have won awards at conventions...

His work is fairly popular:

(You're free to have an opinion of course. Just saying this since it seems you are not familiar with the source.)

Re: Video
Honestly though, this video's visual quality is fairly lacking. It appears as though it was either resized up from a lower resolution, de-interlaced improperly, or both.

The guides on this site should be able to help you.
http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/ ... getb1.html

As for the watermark, I agree it is distracting and makes the video less enjoyable for those of us that keep glancing at it as the video plays. IMHO, it seems somewhat silly to use them when you don't own the copyright on the video and music you used in the video. A more creative route would be better. For example, Notromo occasionally embeds his name into his videos in a way that does not look poorly edited or out of place. Most of us just opt for a credits section of the video. I personally could care less what people do with my videos as long as it is not for monetary gain or entered into an amv contest.

I can speak for this since I was AT the AB Technical judeging... AB Technical judging really for the most part focuses on things like timing, footage quality, effects use, concept, and things of that nature to determine the winners they really don't say well I like azumanga daioh so I'm picking that one over the gundam video... or whatever have you... It really is done on technical merit...

Made me want a hug...

Very nice piece of work, 4/5 (not a five for technical reasons, you know :) )

I noticed the logo the first 10 seconds and then completely forgot about it, but still...I agree with anyone, it's not the greatest idea. Plus, it doesn't prevent people from stealing it, just a bit of cropping and there you go! You should put a proper watermark that takes all the screen, the kind of semi-transparent white text I'd love to see on an AMV from beginning to the end! :D (it would suck but with THAT, you can be sure no stealing would go unnoticed :p).
Joking aside, I also think it's pretty amazing you won a best editing price with that video, I mean it was cool, especially considering it's your 2nd vid, but there's nothing very special to it, only transitions, fades to black, and black/white flashes. That's about it. By that I don't mean it was a bad movie heh, I just don't think THAT special award is the more appropriate for this video.
Appart from that, I really hate 5cm/sec and I only dled it because I was curious to see the kind of editing that made you win, a bit of a disapointment :p
But still, watching it didn't bore me, while most of the 5cm AMV did, I wouldn't say it was very cool, but it was a nice average movie. I didn't regret dling and watching this one and gave it 3 stars =)

And yep, fix the quality. that's weird because at some points, it didn't seem pixelated at all, while most of the time it was pretty bad.
Keep it up

ok firstly it wasn't over-edited and, it was well timed and appropriate. sometimes the simple transitions are the best and dips to black cuts and crossfades well executed is often the best way to go. effects shouldn't scream look at me I'm an effect.... lots of effects doesn't mean good editing it's the overall seemlessness of the video... I listened to the discussion that went on in the technical judging and I agree with them as for the reasons why they chose this as opposed to some of the other videos... NO! I will not go into details and NO! I will not say what other videos were discussed and for what reasons...

secondly. as for the "fix the quality" comment please pardon my french but a "STFU" is in order (I have never issued an STFU before so, believe me this is done all in good humor) LOL.... You Downloaded a DISTRIBUTION quality copy of this video.... AMV contests generally get COMPETITION quality copies which are usually much better looking AND much LARGER.... the larger size restricts them to lower quality for distribution... where a nice high quality contest quality video may run upwards of 500 MB sometimes more... The org LIMITS uploads of videos to around 100 MB or less... unless you get special approval for things like MEPs and very LONG videos... THUS they HAVE NO CHOICE but to upload lesser quality to the org. That's why it may have looked crappy... I assure you. The video we watched for the judging was as pristine as they come.

Cheers

What's with all the attitude? I don't care if you were a judge, and I especially don't care that there was a 505000000 GB top HQ version of this video that you have seen, because that's not the one I've seen. I'm just talking about what I have seen, and I have seen a bad quality AMV, and this bad quality is not due to the size. The colors were vivid, but I could count the pixels on the edges. That can't come from anything else than a mistake the editor made while encoding the video, I'm sorry to say that but I'm pretty sure it's true. Some 60Mb AMVs have better quality.

And thanks for the lesson on good editing, that was totally useless considering it didn't slightly change my opinion. I still think this anime should could have won any other title, but not best editing. Do you watch a lot of AMVs? Because almost EVERY video I dl from here have a good sync and timing, this one has nothing special.

I'm sorry if I winded you up talking down about this convention. Fact is I couldn't care less about anime conventions in general. That certainly didn't give you the right to patronize me or something, I'm entitled to my opinion and I will never shut it because some guy who can't stand criticism on a video that isn't even his, asks me to.
