MisterFurious wrote:Okay, time to put in my two cents.

I agree with a lot of the others, that it seems odd that such a funny video as "Death Note Rhapsody" was allowed to stay in Drama. A general audience is going to vote for the funniest video regardless of whether it's correct for its category.

I will give the judges the benefit of the doubt. Since they probably saw the video more than once, they were able to get over the initial comic shock of L singing "Galileo" and break it down and see if it really was a drama video. On subsequent viewings, I'm sure the drama stands out more.

However, the judges forgot one thing. The audience would only get one chance to see the video before voting. Therefore, they would vote based on their initial reaction ("this is freakin' hilarious"), and audiences like laughing a lot more than the deep introspection brought on by the other drama finalists.

Were I judging the contest, I would invoke a rule that if a video makes the judges laugh their ass off the first time they see it, it needs to be moved into comedy, because that's how the audience will react to it. Heck, people laughed more at "Death Note Rhapsody" than my comedy entry! That should be a big hint that something is wrong.

I also can see Vlad's point that it seems weird that the audience is the final arbiter of what is "Best of Show." For the record, the only reason I won AX 2006 was because back then, Audience Favorite, Creator's Favorite, Staff Favorite, and Judge's Favorite were all given equal weight in determining the "Best of Show." Had Audience Favorite been the sole criterion, then Castor's "Battle of Epic Proportions" would have won. Instead, he and I were in a tie that was broken by the judges. However, I can also see the rationale in letting the audience be the deciding factor, since they might feel slighted that their favorite video didn't actually win (I still remember getting some flak for "stealing" Best of Show from Castor).

Overall, I was pleased at the diversity of videos. I was thoroughly entertained, and there was a broad base of videos. But yes, the sound was too loud.

As I always say, every convention is different. The reaction Rider got to "Lord of the Anime" at Fanime had me so convinced that she was going to take it all at AX (and her video screened stretched there, too). Even more puzzling was the lack of uproarious response to "Robots." Do the AX attendees not know the hilarious awesomeness of that video? Maybe Fanime has more Mac users.

But the jury is still out for me. Are the humans dead?
I absolutely loved your "Perfect Day" video this year Brad. It was a uplifting theme that seemed to fit perfectly with Kodacha. I remember watching fansubs of this series on VHS tapes back in high school.

As for the entry itself, personally, I felt this was a better fit for the Drama category than some of the others. Drama entries shouldn't have laughter involved in my opinion. Cheering or silent awe usually dictates if this is done properly during a screening. Comedy is the one category where the should be non-stop laughter.

This is the 2nd time in a row that my panel room ran your AMV 101 panel. As an AX Staffer, I am the room manager for Live Programming 3. As always, it has been fun having your panel in our room again this year. I always find something new to learn from you guys and it is always entertaining to watch your older classics (Bride of Berserk) and your newer Baccano video. Learning from people such as Vlad and yourself has helped me becoming a better and stronger AMV editor.

Someone said that if you made it to the contest, you've won already. This could be seen as true. I suppose given the prestige the AX contest has been known to have over the years, being in the final cut should stand for something. Unfortunately, popularity contests always seem to beat out skilled editing in some contests. As a general note, audiences only look for something that stands out based on song or the anime; whatever seems recongizable or popular. While as a whole, "Death Note Rhapsody" was entertaining, but along with the overall theme of it being more comedy based, I found some quirks with the editing that did not make it a viable contender for my vote in the Drama category.

This sounds like something a certain AMV Coordinator up in the Northwest has said in the past, when in said convention, there were more in attendance for the AMV contest than Cosplay.

Action - Fate/ Eternal Inferno

Yeah I figured this would take it with all the effects here. Doesn't really tell a story or anything, just one... big... pretty... effect. I personally liked the tightly done Code Geass / You Know My Name which executed a pretty cool concept even if I've never watched this anime all the way through. Ah well.

Drama - Death Note Rhapsody

Hmmm.... they allowed a comedy vid to compete for best drama. Already been discussed.

Comedy - We Need You

I figured out who did this about halfway through. Excellent work. I was about to vote for the Ranma video previously since it was the only other in this category that made me laugh.

AmTVPro - Dance Dance Celebration

I was debating between this and the Macross Frontier given the type of category this was. Excellent choice even if hearing this song made me feel old as hell.

Creators' Choice - Lord of the Anime

Nice vid. Can understand why this was chosen.

Judge's Choice - We Need You

Staff Choice - We Need You

okay... Let it be said. Vlad owns. *bows*

Best of Show - Death Note Rhapsody
... next.

PS: Agree with the necessity of an upbeat category, though not at the expense of pro which is basically an effects-laden category.

@Stryyder: I'm glad you enjoyed Monsoon. A lot of couples/friends at AX have been telling me how much they enjoyed watching the AMV together at the contest, it just felt so amazing to just hear that. :)

Honestly I was hoping for Armor Fatali to win, that AMV had so much in it. Especially with the ending, as much as people didn't vote for it, I believe that AMV deserved Best Drama or even Best of Show for just telling a amazing love story.

So which one did you pick? 8-)
Also is now available for your enjoyment everyone. Announcement thread is below.

It didn't. Section D was conspicuously empty during the AMV contest. It was full during Masquerade, and the rest of the audience was full, too. I had a great vantage point, after all...

I still prefer AMV's, though.
Whatever happened to the Masquerade anyways? I had to leave after... the special guest singer finished up. I felt bad for her because by the time she came up, about half the audience had thinned out, she should have had her own concert. (So that's your username, I was screaming, "What's your username" but it has your pic on it.

Rider4Z wrote:i've been wanting an upbeat category for ax for a while, but i do have mixed emotions on using it to replace the AmTV/Pro category. granted it's only been called "Pro" for two years, it's still been the category where highly skilled creators placed there stuff. and mixing them in with other categories would obviously give them an arguably unfair advantage...
Does anyone remember that when the category was introduced in 2002, it was called "Fun"?
Rider4Z wrote:HOWEVER, i've noticed (these last two years in particular) that there have been videos placed in the other 3 categories that were as refined and polished as Pro finalists. so why shouldn't the special effects videos keep their advantage? they obviously deserve it for all the effort and skill they put into them.
Lots of effects do not necessarily equal effort and skill. In some of the cases where there were videos with lots of effects, it screamed to me, "I'm going to pull out every effect that came with my editing software." There was no artistic reason to pull out those specific effects other than to show off.

Perhaps now that the category is called "Pro", it should be judged by the creators, as AWA does with its pro contest.

In fact, I was wearing the same tuxedo that night as I am in my avatar. That picture was taken the first time I hosted Masquerade back in 2004.

Hey I like that idea, Brad. Pro would denote that someone worked hard at that video and it should be judged by those who can spot the work put in. And we can keep the "creators favorite" since it encompasses the entire contest. Or maybe make the Pro category vids ineligible for the creators favorite awards.

From all the suggestions here I came up with an idea.

5 Categories: Action, Drama/Romance, Comedy, Upbeat(fun), AMtvPro

Audience votes on all categories except AMtv Pro, which are only counted on the Creators ballots. However, since we add another category, decrease the finalists in each category to 6. It ends up with an addition of only 2 videos to the contest overall. This probably wouldn't add any time to the contest, though, since upbeat vids tend to be shorter. The only problem I can see on the coordination side would be adding a new prize and plaque, but I have no knowledge of the budget situation so that is up in the air.

Now of course, this is all just speculation. Michael has done so well getting this contest back on track the past 2 years I wouldn't try to assume anything. This is just speculation on my part of what COULD be done. I know little of how this whole thing is put together.
