I must disagree with this.
Sure there are a bunch of fan pandering anime and manga, but there always has been.
But off the top of my head I can think of several anime, manga titles that have done something different and are not specifically catering to otaku.
Tokyo Zombie
Detroit Metal City
20th Century Boys
Pluto
Umezu is still making non-ordinary awesome stuff
Dragon Head
Shintaro Kago always makes stuff you've never before seen. (And it's really cool)
Cromartie Highschool (if a bit old... I wish it was still being released here)
There was a new anime released that was about an old lady who owns a bunch of cats.
Though these are very good and very different, they do not contain the massive amounts of moe and fanservice you typically associate with pandering to otaku.
Perhaps you just need to look a little harder and try to find new things?
