Where's all the grown-up series?

Modern day romance involving adults: Have you tried Koi Kaze? Okay, so one of the characters is in high school, but it's not told from her viewpoint. And even if it doesn't quite qualify, it's still a powerful experience.

I also recommend Planetes as an adult-oriented anime. Not exactly "modern day"; it's set on a commercial space station, but the politics, themes, and characters are very close at hand.

Maybe Clannad After Story? Clannad takes place in high school but after story is mostly after high school and since the characters aren't going to college then obviously its not a college setting. However, there are some non-realism aspects to Clannad/After Story which if you are looking for 100% realism won't like. Thats my suggestion =]

I'd say watch Skipbeat! but the ending of the anime will make you angry cause it leaves alot of stuff unfinished. Either watch it then try to find out where the manga continues or just go to the manga.

Only other anime I can think of off the top of my head would be white album but its kinda boring at times.

Fist of the north star.

The main charactors are out of highschool and deal with complicated issues such as
death, love triangles, Disaprin, and inner strength.

lol I'm watching Bartender and well... the one thing they did get right is the occupation's 'predisposition'. I don't see how anybody that's not a bartender can like this series. That is to say anybody that's not insane, but that's just my view... Animenfo said it was boring. I really should have listened

yea mang, a series that uses hemingway, humphrey bogart and tolstoi references is totally horrible. you are a terrible person.

i just finished watching that show and it is amazing as fuck, i put it above Gurren-Lagann on my favorites now.

maybe I should get passed the fourth episode but I'm glad those references mean something to you. They don't to me. Sure their great names in literature but... references? Really? I mean, sure Cromartie HS has Freddie Mercury in it, but did it have anything to do with Mercury?? Excel Saga had Van Goh's paintings in it but had absolutely NOTHING to do with Van Goh. I may be a terrible person but your naivity stuns even the most wicked like myself

It's hilarious that you think the queen of england, the president of america and a top ranking military general have anything to do with the stuff i was talking about. i just thought that it was nice for an anime to seriously approach some of my favorite topics, and yes it's kinda normal for that to be a positive thing for a viewer.

Bartender gives interesting stories about alcohol, so if you're interested in spirits and their history like I am it's a great show. If you're not, then why are you watching a show called 'Bartender'? Adding to that is that it's always referencing and dealing with some of my favorite things from pop culture and uses swing and jazz music for its background noise. The plot of each episode has a stream of consciousness kinda style instead of the usual linear way of doing things and most of the rhetoric is extremely refined. I haven't seen an anime as original as that in a long time.
