File size is bigger than I want, Must get it smaller
Hi, I encoded an AMV and my source files were huffyuv, but it ended up being an 215 MB mpeg file. That's fine for conventions but I am NOT going to upload something that big here. I've used Zarx before but it was still over 60 MB, I want to encode it so it's under 60 MB without resortingh to Windows Movie Maker. I have virtualdubmod and the DivX codec, which I would like to encode the AMV to so I could upload it here, any setting suggestions so I can have it small but it still look good? I'd like to set it in 16:9 widescreen.

what res are you working with, and what is the length of your amv?
did you filter your footage with avisynth?
if not, avisynth will help
if so, post your script
also, did you remember to compress your audio?

I didn't use AVSynth but I encoded the AMV as Huffyuv. I was able to get it down to 21 MB on WMV but I want it as a small DivX file too.

Mpeg is a really old codec, no doubt it has a huge ass filesize. With the more recent x264 releases you should be able to bring it under 60 mb with no issues. Could always just do a 2pass with a bitrate so that in brings it under 60MB... also, settings do matter, and psy-rd alone can either make the filesize larger than wanted or incredibly smaller, though if you use the same filesize, the difference will be in the quality.
A recent x264 patch is called macroblock tree. If you need to push down the filesize a lot, that will come in help, since it does sensibly improve the quality with low bitrate videos. If you have a bitrate high enough, it could be unhelpful, though, since it tends to ruin gradients so it isn't exactly the best for anime, which generally uses a lot of gradients (a fix for that is in the work though). If you have a lot of fine detail, it will certainly help in any case.

It's nice that you kept it lossless...but that doesn't have much of anything to do with reducing the filesize...AviSynth is worth using.guardiansoulblade wrote:I didn't use AVSynth but I encoded the AMV as Huffyuv.
Also, you didn't answer my other questions

Oh sorry, I didn't compress the audio, I use a lossless wav file, what are good settings for compressing audio?

a 4:30 wav can be about 45MB...so yeah
I'm not really into audio compression, so the best advice I can offer is to use dBpoweramp, meGUI, BeSweet or something like those to compress your audio.
mp3 for .avi (96-128 Kbps should do it)
aac-lc for .mp4 (I find 64 Kbps adaptive bitrate to be good)

What's with the low bitrates? 196 for mp3, 128 for aac. Going lower really kills, imho.Kariudo wrote:a 4:30 wav can be about 45MB...so yeah

In zarx264gui just change the quantizer...
this is the setting that effects size and quality.
