Re: Hollywood Death Note script leaked, holy crap....
I only just finally saw DN (just... yesterday in fact is when I finished it) and I'm greatly saddened by this, if true (that poster looks CORNBALL AS HELL! We're talking Twilight cornball here!!) they make the thing sound like a tea party!!
I shouldn't fret though... with a good director I'm sure it wouldn't be THAT bad... maybe?

Re: Hollywood Death Note script leaked, holy crap....
Just finished reading all of the script. About half way through it, I could accept Luke's lame character, even though I much prefer Light's.
Sophia isn't really a Misa in my mind. It seems as if they got rid of Misa entirely, and just added a new character, because there is so much more to Misa than Sophia.
With no Ryuk, the story loses some of its 'flavor.' Would have been interesting if Shinigamis were included in the script more, because they definitely made an important part of the story. Though I'm also glad they didn't include Shinigamis, because I wouldn't like to see them animated.
The script seems to only cover up to the part right before Light joins L's team in the manga. I know you can only put so much into a movie script, though, before it becomes too long, or before the original plot is shortened too much.
They did a pretty good job of covering what they did though, but the characters are what bother me most.

Re: Hollywood Death Note script leaked, holy crap....
Big complaints 1-3
1. WHY THE HELL DID THEY TAKE OUT RYUK?!?!?! Half the fricken story revolves around the interaction of the Death Gods with people (mainly Light but many others). It's like trying to make a Ghost Busters movie but leaving out all the ghosts. And Ryuk is one of the central (and definitely most entertaining) characters in the whole story.
2. Light was an arrogant egomaniac who started out with good intentions but ended up a monster, don't try and make him some sympathetic character, he was a dick, plain and simple.
3. The manga was popular and successful because of they way it was written, changing the whole damn story to fit the idea that the main character always has to be a good person ruins everything. Why can't these directors see that if you want to make a movie based on a book (in this case manga counts as a book heh) then try and just follow the damn story the way it was originally made, if you're going to change it then call the movie some other name, so when it fails it doesnt bring shame to the story it was based on.
I had only heard rumors about this but I'm honestly wishing they had not decided to make it at all. My expectations for this movie are about as high as they were for the dragonball one.
BREAK:
------------------------------
Ok, after my initial rant, someone nicely reposted the link to the script and i'm going through it. Aside from butchering Light's character the story isnt as badly changed as I thought. Basically the 2 major changes (aside from Ryuk being gone, which still blows) are 1. that Light is doing all of this out of revenge for his mother dying, so his whole motivation is in trying to track down her killer. 2. He ends up becoming a good person again at the end and burying the Death Note.
However, several of the scenes in the movie are right out of the manga with the cloak and dagger back and forth between Light and L and those seem to be intact, so the movie could still work. I'll just try and enjoy the meat of the story and pretend the altered ending doesnt exist.

Re: Hollywood Death Note script leaked, holy crap....
With out the script i can't give you my oppinion but i can probably give you some reasons.
First this is a hollywood take on a Japanese story and "Death Gods" does not make since in American culture especially if they are making this for the general public.
Second with out "Death Gods" Luke or Light needs motivation and revenge is a pretty standard form of reliable motivation that most viewers could agree or cope with in order to make light of the fact that the protagonist is murdering people.
Third the ending seems to be made as a fail safe. Happy endings usually sell more then sad ones usually.
Once i get the script copy i could give a better opinion but this is just what i have now.

Yeah, breaking news: hollywood movies are made for happy conservative christian families.
Everybody stop even looking up these kind of news, you will not miss anything good - ever.

Re: Hollywood Death Note script leaked, holy crap....
if you want to look at the script go through the link posted and go down the forum posts that are about that topic, one of the ones near the end has a new link to the script.
And happy endings may statistically sell more than sad endings but i find that the movies with sad endings tend to be better in quality (cause the were not designed just in order to please people's expectations.) Unfortunately as movies are made to make money the later tends to happen more often than not.

Re: Hollywood Death Note script leaked, holy crap....
Relax.
I doubt this "leaked script" is real.
First of all, WB only got to rights to adapt the manga for an American live-action film in April of 2009. What is the date on this draft script? April 7, 2009. Usually you acquire rights before paying someone to write a script. After all, what happens if some weird legal thing pops up preventing you from making the film? That sort of thing happens all the time, so I doubt they would have penned the script before the rights for an American version were secure.
Secondly, there are no watermarks on it. Real Hollywood scripts have watermarks, usually with that individual's name right on it. If Brad Pitt is given a script, it says Brad Pitt on every page; if Bob Johnson is given a script, it says Bob Johnson on every page; et cetera.
Thirdly, it is really badly written. That isn't to say that a real script couldn't be badly written (I'm quite sure it could be), but this is poor writing in a different way. I'm talking about basic grammar, stylistic inconsistency, sentence redundancy, and story structure. It really feels like this was penned by someone writing at an early college level. Not a professional. Again, professionals make bad scripts all the time, but in a different way.
Could it be real?
I suppose.
But I doubt it.
So until we know for sure, let's calm ourselves.
P.S. I'm not saying that the real thing won't be bad. I don't know. Nobody can possibly know that yet. But I am saying that this travesty is likely a hoax, and we shouldn't get worked up over it.
... and let's hope I'm right!
