Dubbed or Subbed: Which is better?

Post by xPiikanyaa » Sat Oct 17, 2009 5:58 am

Well, if you can understand Japanese then you'll probably prefer the original Japanese, but if you don't know much Japanese then do you watch the English dub or the fansubs?

Here's a good thread that goes over the sub vs dub debate in great detail.

Personally I think it depends on the anime. If it has a good English dub like Lucky Star then I'll watch the dub, but if it's got a crap dub like Pokemon then I'll watch the subbed version.

I rarely get to see a smarmy comment as good as that :)

The thing that likely annoys me the most, is if you listen to an English dub with sub titles visible, shouldn't they be saying the same damned thing?
Common people, it's not rocket science, they say something in Japanese, and then you translate it. And the translation should be the same spoken or written. It's f**king English.
Anime, one of the few things about the internet that doesn't make me hate the internet.

You do know why that happens right?
More times than not, it takes a different amount of time to say something in Japanese than it does in English. Heck, next time you watch a sub, try it out for yourself.
So unless you want to sound really stupid (talking really slow...or at the very least speaking adjacent sentences at differing speeds and being out of sync with the animated mouths,) you tweak the script so that it has a similar meaning but fits both with the length and mouth movements.

So to answer your question, it would be nice but is often impossible...unless you want bad kung-fu dub quality

what i find hilarious is when an conversation is about a "adult" or "politically incorrect" topic so they completely change the conversation in the dub to something else to avoid controversy. It’s pretty funny if you turn the subs on and are listening to one conversation when reading a completely different one.

I think the biggest factor for me is
a. How good the dubs are (some are decent, I like the vampire hunter D: Bloodlust dub a lot)
b. which one I listen to first, if I listen to the original Japanese version first then I almost always prefer it to the English one cause I have mentally matched the voices with the characters (and the original is usually better than the dub anyway).

I would say in general I prefer subs, although there are always exceptions. The only real reason I would prefer dubs is if I’m trying to multitask and don’t have time to read the subtitles while trying to do something else.

Then again I pretty much just restated everything I said in the second post on that link posted above lol. Probably just have just pasted the link again.

2 questions, one related to the other:

1) Do you speak Japanese?
2) If not, then how can you tell the Japanese dub is better than the English?
