Sorry to intrude in on the God complex here, but I
think it's worth pointing out that your case for submitting formal
takedowns to boochsack is tenuous at best. (If you know about US
copyright law, you should also know about DMCA takedown procedures and
what they require.)
I never went as far as submitting formal take downs and having YTube do it themselves through copyrighted laws. All I did was I sent a nice message/email asking to person who posted it up if they would kindly take it down and to understand why I don't want them up. 95% of the users were very very nice about removing it and totally understood my reasoning. (only 1 person I couldn't contact at all, so I had to submit a comment on the video itself).
I never ever plan to contact YTube and submit formal requests, I feel that would be going to far for an amv that I made.
I just wanted to do what I could by myself (I posted hear to get opinions on what to doto avoid submitting a formal request at all costs to YTube to get my stolen video off,and since I can't, that's why I'm giving up on that video now)

is it wrong just to nicely ask people to take down your own work that you don't want up?

It's not wrong to ask nicely, but if it's not working, but you really want it to work, then you gotta take the next step.

Again, I wouldn't be terribly concerned about it. You pirated the anime and the music (even if you bought them legitimately, you still did not have written permission from the artists/companies to use them, did you?) so despite wanting to make a portfolio piece out of it, the same applies.

Now, if you have a camera, and you went out and shot a whole bunch of footage, and you bought some royalty free music, and you made a demo reel out of that and somebody stole it, that's a whole different ballgame. You own the rights to it, because you made it. Getting that taken down would be much easier.

Not saying that amv's are a bad way to showcase editing in a reel, but chances are you're not gonna land a *strictly* editing job right off, and you're going to be working with lots of footage from various cameras. My advice would be to edit with something I shot myself, to show that I at least know how to operate the camera. Again, depends on your focus, but it's never a bad skill to have.

oh, I have other things as well in my portfolio that me and some students shot ourselves (please don't think it's noting but amvs  ). I was told the exact same thing you said by my teachers at school. That's why I only use 1 or 2 amvs in my portfolio. Mainly I use ones I get recognition for at contests or ones that show a particular skill, like my .hack//sign I put translated song subtitles into. since I'm out of school, and I don't have any fancy cameras and such (and can't afford any right now), it's hard for me to find things to edit and improve my skills with, so I do amvs to practice with as well.
The job market in the area I'm in doesn't have much video editing positions, partly due to the economy (one I applied for got cancelled altogether because they didn't have the $$, UGH!!!! and it was perfect for me too!!!!!).

I know the same copyrights laws applies to copyrighted materials in portfolios (I was told that in school), That's why the teacher's told me that when presenting those pieces, to make sure the interviewer is fully aware that I used copyrighted material and it's just to show skill only. (a lot of images that my school used for graphic design projects as well were also copyrighted too, so it's just not video editing that material like that were used for at my school.). we were taught why it's ok to use materials like that in our classes and why it's important to limit what you use of copyrighted materials. I only to have 1 or two pieces of copyrighted material used if you are to use any and to have everything else by your original work (I sometimes change the amv pieces to match the skills they are looking for too, but I keep it at max two). So I am careful about what amvs I use and what my limit is.

(btw, Zephyrstar, I did do an opinion and rating for you lucky star video, so please check that out :D )
