(1) Was it ever revealed how Chise and Shuji first became boyfriend and girlfriend?
The anime started with them as already that way.

(2) Whats the deal with Akemi, the Tomboy? She was always sweet on Shuji, but did they go out?

(3) Anyone else find it depressing? And I dont really understand the ending.. Does
everybody really
Spoiler :
die? and was shuji just saved by chise? And is he living in an empty space until he runs out of food?

1. It doesn't matter.
2. Typical anime crush is typical. Nothing worth looking into.
3. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes, but theoretically it is impossible to maintain a state of existence in a void. I believe that through Chise's will he has achieved an existence that requires no sustenence. He can then spend the rest of eternity with Chise's spirit while the rest of the world rots in hell.
(At least that's how I remember it. I don't remember all of the details of the show.)

Not sure I'd call it Apocalyptic, per se, but I suppose you could get away with it.

Most people think of "post-apocalyptic" when they see that word, so it may confuse some folks. I dunno.

I'd recommend reading the manga, it covers some details deeper, though I have to admit that the people around the anime made a great job on converting.
