I ran through one of my favorite games of all time the day before yesterday: The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.

A little below my usual par, though. 3.5 hours, 4 fairy resurrections, 1 game over, skipped the blue cane, but got everything else. I can usually go through without Game Overing, but I screwed up in Misery Mire, trying a new strategy on the boss. Second attempt I killed it without taking a hit.

Ugh. I have a love-hate relationship with this game.

On the one hand, I fucking hate the gameplay. I'm not kidding. I absolutely hate how really potentially good tactical setups are wasted by throwing 50 guys at you and making you panic then making you not panic than make you mow everyone down as quickly as you can. Textbook twitch-response gameplay... blehhhhh. It's neither modern nor warfare. The game forces me to commit fundamental tactical no-nos and errors, going against every instinct a sane modern combatant - whether they are running on foot or driving a fucking tank - should have. It causes me to run through hails of fire, to grossly mis-use cover and get myself cornered, to defend buildings by getting on edges of roofs and windows. WHO DOES THAT?ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS? There's been a fair amount of variety of weapons and targets, but sadly every time I got excited by a potential tactical setup, it was ruined by an zombie-horde style rush of foreign-speaking nationals Where is my goddamn tactical thinking? Why am I not allowed to use my brain in this game? WHYYYYyyyyy.....

I know I shouldn't have expected different from a CoD title, but if mad human waves played at least somewhat believably in Stalingrad, Berlin or Normandy, they feel tragicomically out of place in these modern settings.

On the other hand, the story is also a complete load of unbelievable shit.

And yet...

Oh my god the environments, graphics and cinematic setups of every level in this game are so. fucking. incredible. I cannot get enough of how amazing this game looks and feels, visually, even on my meagre system. As a result, I keep playing these missions over and over with my mouth agape, basking in just how far cinematic games (we can also call them rail shooters) have come in the last few years.

I wish all this didn't look so great I could be all "original" and hate this game. Instead, I love it by default, like everyone seems to. Yes, even if I still hate the gameplay style and story. I can't say no to how awesome it looks and how great so many sequences in it are. Whyyyyyyyyyyy
