Ripping the FMVs from Septerra Core

Post by Xyex » Tue Feb 23, 2010 7:13 pm

I have, for years, wanted to be able to extract the FMV videos from the PC game Septerra Core: Legacy of the Creator. However, nothing I do seems to work. The files seem to be in standard MOV format. I don't even have to change the .db extension to .mov for it to run in QuickTime. But loading it up in QuickTime will allow the audio to play back without issue, but the video remains a solid white block and get something about a 'valid media key' to 'authorize access to secured media' not being found.

I know it's possible to get these videos to extract properly and convert them because I've come across them on-line in various formats over the years. :?

Not tried VLC, haven't gotten it back since my last restore since everything it can do seems to be covered by everything else I've already got. Same with WMPC, really. WMP has the same general issue as QT, only it tries to download a codec, fails, then plays the audio just fine. Also just decided to give Winamp a try for the heck of it. I get 0:00 as the display time (for .db and .mov extensions) and no playback at all. Interestingly enough, however, if I change the extension to .avi I get no display time on the playlist but the audio will play. Still no video, however.

Sounds like protection on the in-game fmvs is hardcoded into the game itself (and it passes your product key to unlock the content)

So I'm betting you'll have to get a screen recorder and record yourself playing the game to get access to the fmvs

I was curious, so I pulled my copy of the game out to check them.

VLC plays the video, but has issues with the audio. ffmpeg plays the files back fine, so you can load them into AviSynth with ffvideosource and ffaudiosource.

FYI, the files are 320x240 or 320x192 SVQ1 (Sorenson Video 1) files at 15 fps, with IMA4 ADPCM audio in a MOV container, just with a renamed extension.

Ah, cool. I just switched the libavcodec on for SVQ1 in FFDShow and now the videos will play back in WMP and Winamp now, which is a nice step in the right direction. Not sure about AviSynth since I never could figure it out when I tried it once before, but since even the codec settings in FFDShow haven't let me load into VDub or AVIDemux I guess I'll ave to give it a go again.

Yes! <3

Sorry for the double post, but couldn't edit. Anyway, got it working. Apparently AviSynth is a lot easier to work with when you're just trying to do something simple with it. XD I've got it loading up in VDub now with FFDshow and AviSynth. Thanks a ton LantisEscudo~

Hello all!
I just to let you know that you can directly drag the DB files to MPlayer,a
and all of the video and audio played with no problem, just like in the game.
You can also use MediaCoder to play and reconvert the video.

I think the best option for him is to use VLC player. When a friend of mine had a similar issue he was able to solve it by converting all the files using VLC player. If it is not working then there is another solution. He can make use of FMV software extractor. A number of formats can be extracted using this. Moreover it is especially designed for extracting clips from games. It can be downloaded free of cost from the internet.

Yeah. I know. I'm posting in an older thread. .. please don't beat me up.

ANYHOO...I just wanted to say thanks to you all for sharing all this info. I was having the same video extraction issue as Xyex, but managed to finally get it resolves -- thanks to you guys, of course.

Now, the reason why I quoted "a1ic3." I see where you're coming from with video conversion, but my videos never turn out right. I made a Hellsing music video about 2 years ago that I wanted to upload to Youtube. It was in a WMV format. Unfortunately, the music was all out of sync -- along with some sound effects I manged to throw in myself. Basically, every conversion ended up with the audio really wonky. It was especially weird listening to the music video with headphones on. Has anyone on here happened to resolve the audio issue? It would certainly make my life a whole lot easier if someone could help me out. Thanks, guys! =D
