Anime about war

Grave of the Fireflies is already being considered.

I'm looking for an anime that is about war. I don't mean a mecha-war though, so things like FMP and Code Geass aren't gonna work. First Squad isn't what I'm looking for either. I don't want that fantasy-ish stuff meshed in, plus I need something a tad more emotional/sentimental than that, if you will. I'm looking for an anime that is similar to Grave of the Fireflies, but with more action than that perhaps? Not comedy, so no to Sora No Woto. I don't care if the anime was made back in 95, lol, which is probably where I'll be finding what I'm looking for. But if you can think of an anime with even war elements similar to that of GotF, that'd be great. I'll continue my research as well...

now that I think about it, saying no fantasy really limits my choices. Mechas and fantasy elements allowed, I guess, but nothing like FMP or Code Geass, I need more drama to it.

Gundam 00 has alot of non-mecha war scenes.

Eureka seveN has some war scenes that involve some gunfighting (without mechas.) Stuff like in episode 9 & 10.

If dogfights are alright, then Allison & Lillia has a bit of that.

Aaaand... Genius Party Shanghai Dragon should be perfect for what you're looking for.

It does have mecha though but it's epic war ^^ and doesn't only use mechas there are parts without mechas ^^
