This is the problem with FLCL amvs.
Scenario one:
Random clips compiled with a random song because someones trying to be epic.
Scenario two:
Someone does a pairing(noataxharuko, noataxmamimi, noataxninamori, etc)
Scenario three:
Someone thinks songs like sum41 and msi go well with it because its so "random and goofy."
All three of these are fine with other shows...and work fine for the average viewer. However when working with fooly cooly...people rarely hit the nail and totally grasp the show and its deeper meaning. I cant tell you how many amvs ive seen where i facepalm. Yes...i myself am not very good at editing it....and i dont think most editors would be able to make an amv that fully embraces FLCL. Thats why i said, you can try to edit flcl....but u probably wont do it perfect.

Lmfao, who can edit one anime perfect to begin with? But yes, there are AMV's entirely above the rest in terms of editing and these "Scenario's" you've placed, the videos aren't perfect by any means but set the standards for a video with that anime usually.
S1: This is a problem with
ALL anime not just FLCL, which I'm sure you are aware of. I need not explain more on this.
S2:Now recently there have been ALOT more sentimental FLCL video's for mainly one reason, Exsphere, I'm aware there were previous edits of FLCL that were sentimental but Exsphere really set the bar high imo with The Dreamer (which was based around two characters not really a pairing I suppose, but still.) now I'm sure if you seen that and enjoyed it you may have been motivated to edit like that since you seen that it can be done and done well. Now alot more editors have brought back FLCL in hopes of achieving a good FLCL video through the sake of the sentimental area, honestly it's not that FLCL can't be edited good or whatever, it's the fact that it's almost as overused as DBZ, well maybe I'm exaggerating there but it's pretty close considering almost everything has been done with FLCL, hence why it's hard to impress most people with such edits.
S3:I agree about the MSI stuff, but thats because in all sense FLCL is goofy anime, it was meant to be obviously...., Robots coming out off peoples heads etc...., FLCL is off the wall ( at least it was when I first got into it ) and really when the first few edits of MSI and FLCL came about I'm sure quite a few people flipped shit because it was so awesome or something that's why it's such a popular way of editing it, I personally never liked those edits to begin with.
Lastly, really to edit an AMV that grasp's the anime as a whole, is entirely possible, but that's a matter of total opinion on how the viewer and the editor see the video, it doesn't matter how it's achieved whether through ANY genre of music or ANY editing style it can, and has been done.
