Moved to suggestions.
I don't have any songs in mind that would work well with death note. As far as getting the video, you'd get that from the DVDs (discussing where to download anime is against the org Forum Rules). If you need help with getting the footage into your program from the DVDs (and even if you don't) I'd suggest taking a look at the guides; more specifically, this one. The correctness of parts of that one have been questioned, but either way it's still good enough for the majority of editors.

As for the song, I would suggest something screamo(maybe what its called)? There's a lot of "OH DANG" moments, and a lot of close-up shots, which screamo goes well with.
I don't really listen to that kind of music so I can't give you specifics.
If you want to avoid screamo, then I would go with a symphony or classical music; I think that fits insanely well.
Just stay away from techno, as it doesn't feel right at all.

The great thing about Death Note is that you can pretty much use it with anything, to create any mood that you want. Here are two very different AMV's I did using DN:
and
More important than finding a song, I think, is coming up with your concept first. Is it funny? Dramatic? Spooky? Once you have that, narrowing down a song will be much easier.

How about Journal For Plague Lovers by Manic Street Preachers? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=66lmY6P5ZeI) It fits death note well in a few ways; the title references a journal, okay so it was probably metaphorical but shush it still fits, the "only a god can bruise/ only a god can soothe/ only a god reserves the right/ to forgive those who defy him" chorus fits well with DN's whole religious schtick, the reference to "these perfect actors" could easily be Light (who acts all the time) and a whole bunch of other lyrical stuff fits well with DN. Plus IMO it's a pretty chill song.
