Need advice on spending some cash

Post by CaTaClYsM » Sat Dec 14, 2002 2:32 am

I was thinking of getting a TV and some classic games (I know the Saturn wasnt popular, but if you want shining force 3, well then you need to get it. And lets not forget the enduring classic Nights.) maybe an SNES too, earthbound and secret of mana, FF3. but on the other hand, a graphics card would be nice considering what I am using right now is onboard video. but then again a DVD drive and and a selection of anime would be nice. but the reason why I am not getting all of this stuff is that when I get the money (if I get the money.) it will only be around 100 bucks. any advice?

If it were me, I'd go for the console goodies. A video card is okay, but if you don't buy one carefully or spend enough, it'll be disappointing. For instance, me and klinky both have Geforce 2 GTS boards (about $150 each when they came out), which are still giving out respectable (to us, anyway) performance. If we'd gotten something else, we'd have probably been forced to upgrade again a while ago.

And I don't think DVD performance would be great with integrated video, unless you had a good chipset.

So console stuff. An SNES is a good value, since it can last for a long time.
I'm out...

I thought about buying Secret of Mana a little while back, but when I went to find it, the cheapest that was availible was 50 US dollars. its WAY expensive.

My main goal/priorety is the Saturn, I can get Nights, Virtual On, Daytona USA, Shining force 3, and a buch of other games for around 50 if I keep an eye out for the right auction on E-Bay. But then again, the DVD drive and Anime is also important, not just for entertainment, but for ETHICAL reasons as well. All of my anime except for Macross Plus is downloaded. (and Macross Plus was recorded off TV, so I didn't exactly pay for that either.) And I have had a good reason to download it. I have no money to pay for it. And since I have no money it isn't exactly like I am arbitrarily not buying it because I am a cheap bastard. There was no other way to get it. But once I have money, and then CHOOSE not to buy anime, then I because the pirate that is stealing the hard earned effort of the anime companies like GAINAX who work to put out anime. As a matter of fact, lets just change this to a thread about suggestions for anime on a budged from scratch. 100-150 buck budget. I have a capture card (my dad bought it) that disables macro-vision. Maybe a VHS colection? a VCR would be 30 bucks, and the tapes are sell as cheap if not cheaper than the DVD's, but then again, the sub/dubbing options arent on the VHS tapes and pose a serious disadvantage to the DVD drive. the DVD drives run about 50 bucks anyway. GOD DAMNIT, WHY DO I HAVE TO BE CURSED WITH ETHICS AND SCRUPLES!

Errr, DVDs are pretty much cheaper and better then VHS tapes unless you buy your tapes used.

The thing that stands out in my mind when I think of Daytona USA is, a)long load times B)worst popup in any racing game I've every seen.

Yeah.. Nights wasn't too impressive either.

Didn't play Gran Turismo much. It did have better physics, cars, handling, tracks & graphics. Daytona could not hold a candle to Gran Turismo...

Well, for snes you could always just go get zsnes and play it on your comp for free. I'm sure there are some Saturn emulaters around somewhere too, so if you can find a good one I'd go for the anime.
The best effects are the ones you don't notice.
