The cash prizing for the AMVs that was alluded to before will break down as follows.

Best of Category (Drama, Action, Pro, Comedy, Fun/OVA) will be $1,500.
The Best of Show will be $2,500.
For those of you doing the math the cash prizing comes to 10K. This is in addition to that crappy Naruto figure you didn't want. ;)

It has taken us many many years, to get this contest the respect it deserves and to be treated as more than the black sheep. Now we are the cool Black Sheep. :)

We owe it all to you guys and your continued support over the years. Thank you!

This year is our 20th Anime Expo. The theme is "Year of the Fan". As part of that, the CEO and the board gave us $10K to use for AMV prizing.

Now, lets get those edit rigs a whirrin. I look forward to seeing your entries.

I just learned about this from the press release on AnimeNewsNetwork. I find it very ironic that when I announced us doing something like this at A-Kon a couple years ago - awarding cash prizes - people raised hell about it and even threatened boycotting submitting. Now that AnimeExpo seems to have created a precedence for legitimately giving "large" cash prizes to winners, perhaps we can start offering the same thing at A-Kon, without the backlash from editors.

Granted, I do recall Otakon (and I think AnimeFest in Dallas) gave cash prizes to winners in the past, but they were chump-change compared to the thousand$ being offered in L.A.

NO! I don't have time anymore. That's what headlines and one page highlights are for. So tell me what I missed - if it's important to know.

People are basically raising hell about it and threatening to boycott submitting. That, and a hearty debate over minutiae pertaining to longstanding rules regarding footage clearances.

The irony is that the people boycotting aren't editors.

Well, I guess what is comes down to for editors are:

Are you entering for the prize money, or just to see your video without having to win. the only problem with large incentives like this is they a lot of people will shift into pandering to the audience only without worrying how good the video really is (After all the audience determines who gets the money). This in term does not mean a better AMV contest. That really for me is more of the issue I see rather then the actual act of offering money.

For me, it’s not about the money, but for many that is a LOT of money so I can understand the enticement… Quite honestly, I’d just be happy with a real nice trophy as that brings back memories more then a wad of cash.

pandering is a possibility (in fact likely), but it would still have to make it passed the judges don't forget.

me personally i've been entering since 06 and this year isn't any exception. however i'm not gonna pretend the cash prizes aren't a motivation to step up my game.

I think we will definetly get some entires that are just doing it for the cash. IMO though despite how many this will be the odds of htem making it through are really bad even in spite of people's disagrements for finalists each year. The fact is that if you're only doing it for that purpose then you're probably not putting a lot of work into it and are just pandering as you said. Pandering is one thing and you can win with it but you can't win on pandering alone. There has to be SOME quality behind the video for it to get anywhere. I think AX will get more entires, but I don't think we'll notice a real difference in the final show unless a ton of editors boycott it and let the pandering cash grabbing people run the contest.

Also yeah, I like the trophy more, trophies have memories. Cash doesn't.

If the next video i see from you is DBZ vs. Bleach you've officially jumped the shark.

Unless of course you actually use Ichigo and Goku jumping over a shark in the video - then it's self parody and i'll excuse it.
