Have you ever wondered how they make animes?
If you do then this is your lucky day. I work for fox 11 news I am a motion graphic designer i know some people that know some other people and well my friend introduced me to this guy who works for Kyoto Animation. So i got his number and called him we talked for a while he showed me his portfolio and i was amazed.......Let's just say he knows how to draw really good.By the way he was a visual editor for The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Alright so i asked him What programs do you guys use? And he told me. Well here at the studio on the animation department we use a custom made program it's kind off like maya but its much harder and you can combine 3d and 2d together. For compositing we use Autodesk Toxik and after effects. Now for those who don't know what compositing really is. Compositing is the combining of visual elements from separate sources into single images, often to create the illusion that all those elements are parts of the same scene. We use that a lot here at the studio i work for but of course its much easier since we have greenscreens all over the place.*YAY NO ROTOSCOPING* So yeah i hope this helps you guys. btw they don't use photoshop or illustrator to make the characters they use a pen and paper after that they scan them and send them to the nameless custom program. Infact i don't even know if they use Photoshop at all i forgot to ask well if you guys have any questions on how to make effects or anything that has to do with After effects/Premiere Pro/Autodesk Maya/Atudesk 3d Max/Autodesk Lustre - FLAME - SMOKE -FLARE/Nuke 6/Avid Meida Composer/Avid Pro Tools HD 9/Cinema 4D/Mocha V2/FL STudio 9/ and basically any other adobe product ecept flash and dreamviewer >.> Just ask me I've been working in the design field for 13 years now and yes i know all those programs. So don't be shy and ask im new to this forum butsince im probably going to be here a while feel free to pm me all you want.

Adobe Dreamwever/Bridge/Illistrater/PhotoShop are all requirements for 1st year students these days.
Gedit was much easier; soo .. why do Colleges want us to use Pain-In-The-Ass software that Cost's way to much for what it does??

Costs too much for what it does? I think most of it is a bargain compared to where it used to be. When I started college, a seat of Maya was $22,000. It ran on Irix, so you had to have an SGI workstation. The "blue toaster" cost something like $17,000. The complexities of these programs and what they're capable of has gone way up and the cost has come way down. I think you can get Maya now for about $3500. And again, there's a reason for this. It's the same reason you don't see Blender being used by high end studios....... Yet. None of this matters however as it's the user's knowledge and willing to learn which dictates the results. Same thing with video editing software. People can argue FCP/Avid/Adobe/Vegas all day long, but they essentially do the same thing.
I'd also like to ask OP what the name of the guy at Kyoani was.....John Smith? I know that guy too.

Re: Have you ever wondered how they make animes?
.. now I don't doubt that it is not as expensive as it used to be:
1993 --
AiST Media Mania TV Pro .. $1477.95 w/Student Discount.
Avid 3 for mac
nodda for lenux
It did 2400 X 2400 with 18 layers and "you" designed the Effects & Transitions!
( I still have it. It doesn't work on System 7 but did work on Vista. )
.. this software was expensive and was designed to work on Win 3.10 thru XP.
.. nothing made today works on systems 'yet to be released! -- That was a bargan!
.. Soo .. what are the designed operating systems this new stuff is going to be good for???
