A STRONG suggestion: Do NOT spend it all. Throw 45% of that money in a bank account because that's how much Uncle Sam will be asking for when tax time comes. Not kidding.
This is why movie stars always have IRS problems regardless of earning millions. :uhoh:

I put it all in the bank today. I dont want to spend a cent until I am sure of what to use it on and I wanted to wait until taxes were done anyways. But yeah I have always saved money since I am not the most financially secure person in the world. I sleep on the couch in my living room since I don't really have a room/bed. I live with 3 other family members in a small apartment complex. So money is tight and I haven't told the rest of the family I got the money because I don't want them to guilt trick me into using it for fugal things that they want and such, I love my family but I can't trust them with money. so I am keeping it secrete, only my close friends, my brother and cousin I trust more than anyone knows I have this much money. they told me to put it int he bank and don't tell anyone and to hold off spending it until taxes are over and spend it on something I want since I deserved it XD but i dunno lol I like helping others to fault I guess Xd but right now I am just keeping it safe in the bank.

thank you for telling me this too *HUG* its very re-assuring and I didnt know they took 45% of the money so I'll have to figure out how much I have left. Thank you *HUG*

Lol I want to quote back to everyone but there is so many comments to go through. um yes I will submit next year, thank you so much for wanting me to participate again *HUG* and ... I am actually 22... lol but its ok people think I am 14 because I am so short and I have a small voice and such. lol the Ax staff were concerned about me when I was signing the W2 forms because they thought I was younger than 18 and I told them I was 22 and they were shocked. I get it a lot so its fine. But yes I will participate since so many people are asking me too XD.
I actually didn't get to see what you looked like since I was signing my W-9 in the back to get the my Best Fun/OVA cash prize. All I heard was "Some kid won Best of Show".

Congrats again and hang out with us at the AMV Creator dinner next year!
To start of quickly, this year was a better year for AX as the past 2 have been. Things are improving but still haven't gotten to the point of fixed status yet. But overall I had fun attending again this year. I agree with all the points mentioned already. The official AMV events weren't bad, they just had flaws that need to be fixed.

As for some constructive griping, I am a firm advocate of removing the "Pro" from AMTV Pro as the judging is obviously not adhering to the whole point of what a Pro video is. As a judge, a pro video is something that exhibits an excellence in editing above the standard AMV. Whether that be with effects or other advanced editing practices. A Pro video is not to be judged by how much the judge likes the song and/or anime used or how "funny" the video appears to be. I mention this because a couple of the vids in the Pro category this year really made me think that the latter is what happened with the judging. I was honestly upset as an editor to see what videos out of 300+ entries were picked for Pro compared to what only made preshow. If this was just an upbeat/dance category then I'd have no complaints about the selection process, but it's the Pro definition found in the rules that is being blatantly ignored that bothers me. This all would be remedied if "Pro" was removed from the category and AMTV went back to being dance/upbeat like it was in the past.
Hagaren Viper wrote:Also, am I the only one who is a bit iffy about next year's R rating? Yes, I know that when it was announced that people were excited, and I know that it wouldn't be exclusively R-Rated entries, but the few people I spoke to about it were pretty skeptical, with a couple a bit unsure if they wanted to attend the contest next year [I know you cant please everyone, but not everyone appreciates pushing the PG-13 rating to the limit]. It seems like it would be better to have a R-Rated category/Contest on top of what we have, not a Rated R contest and a 'Kid Contest'. Again, I know it's a bit early to be baawing, but still wanted to give my two cents.
This decision honestly does not surprise me. Most AMV contests label themselves as PG-13 but are in fact lying to the audience and pushing an R. I think Michael is making a smart decision to cover his basis with AX being as big as it is. I've seen so many contests sporting a PG-13 rating which feature videos with graphic head violence, sexual references, songs with multiple F-bombs, etc. These things automatically earn you an "R" rating. If a parent was angry enough they could probably wreak some havoc on the con heads about some content featured in these "PG-13" contests. If anyone wants to disagree then please go find a movie rated PG-13 made in the past 4 years that shows someones face cut in half on screen in the nature of Samurai X or Garden of Sinners; scenes of which I have seen used in many PG-13 contests. Just sayin.

On the other hand, if this rating hike is happening just for more overly foul content videos to make the cut then I take back my aforementioned opinion.

On the violence aspect, animated content is held to a different standard than live action. The MPAA ratings guidelines used to even explicitly mention this at one point IIRC.

It will be far more difficult to fit into a very specific R rating (though, i've heard "18+" thrown around too - which is NC17, not R), and I think it's just asking for problems. When you say "R", people will most certainly go the soft-core hentai route with their entries (which is within the confines of an "R" rating), the judges will balk about this not being a hentai contest and throw those entries out, and the people submitting them will rightfully get upset.

Come to think about it, I haven't seen a Kenshin OVA video at AX for a while now...

Damn you lucky people and having the time to post. I had to catch up on a metric ton of work when I got back.

Ok one thing at a time.

Pro:

Yeah I think the contest catagories need renaming a bit so that it is obvious that Pro is more technical and that the fun/parody catagory is more clearly defined. Potentially I would remove the word fun as well but entirely fo rthe purpose of removing audience perception that it's practically another comedy catagory so that it won't always be "funniest video wins" not that that happened dthis year but it's a problem I can see happening down the line. Also it might be wise to move comedy to the end as others have suggested, this was most noticable during the reshowing as a lot of people started leaving after comedy and missed out on some great videos. (On the other hand, I can see how moving comedy to the end might cause some people to intentionally show up late)

R rating:

I'm torn on this. Up until this point AX has operated within the lines I've seen most other cons operate within for the main AMV contest. Hell I've been censored in more cons than AX and I've never been censored in AX as far back as I can recall. I'm not entirely against the R rating, but I am a bit skeptical for two reasons. 1. I feel bad for people that won't be able to attend the contest as this will both cut on the audience size and people's interest since they will not be able to attend. 2. Splitting entires, I understand having a more kid friendly showing but frankly I think it risks dividing contest entires too much as it would be confusing where we should send our videos and how prizes work. If you're dedicated to that showing then I'd say just make the "kid's showing" an exhibition rather than a wholey seperate contest to avoid overlap and confusion.

Iron chef:

Loved it. Though I agree with Yue in that between all the AM events I was starting to see a lot of the same videos again and again, this much overlap should likely be avoided as it does become tiresome. As far as the event as a whole was concerned I have no complaints.

Pre-show

You know, I'm fine with Michael showing what he wants but I do also understand that it's a great place to show entires that didn't make it. If all continues for AMVs as has been however it might not be a bad idea to see if another room can be scheduled one day for an "AMV Exhibition" where all that is shown are the videos that did not make it. i.e. akin to AWA playing videos that didn't make it into the awards showing. That way Michael can show whatever he wants during pre-show (past entires and narrow misses for the present year) while everything else will be shown later. Though some selection may still be necessary for an exhibition so it doesn't have a long string of the bottom of the barrel entries.

AMV 101

I really have no opinion on this - I admittedly show up to get my tickets but I think most editors do since we allready know all about what is being presented. I do agree that a 201 panel should be added but perhaps on a bi-yearly basis or on the following day from the 101. That should give people more ground to cover.

Nic's panel

Thoroguhly enjoyed it, glad to see the large turnout as well. I actually like the late night slot personally and it's a testement to how well AMVs stand up that the room was so packed at such a late hour.

My metric ton of work requires approvals from people who are still on vacation, so I'm trying to make the best use of my time.

Also, my second video of Gurren Lagann to the Star Trek trailer is now up (two years after I made it, not sure what happened there). The third entry which didn't make it will be up as soon as I get clearance for a larger upload.
