i think this year's contest accomplished that, and a good chunk of credit for that i think goes to the number of quality videos entered the judges had to choose from.

It took a step towards that, but I still don't believe that it was accomplished. A large number of excellent videos didn't even get considered or make the preshow. The contest, while taking small steps in the right direction, is still far from being a excellent one.

I don't believe there will ever be a time that everyone will agree on the finalists and such, but there were still obvious problems with the videos that made it in. And considering how AX likes to boast the numbers pertaining to the amount of entries it receives, it makes it very difficult to believe that those were really the best.

But that doesn't mean that we shouldn't strive for improvement.

not disagreeing with you. there's always room for improvement.

however continually keeping that thought in my mind keeps me from forming biased opinions that could easily fan forum flame. fffffffff.

So far, I've yet to see any flaming going on. Only opinions that were interpreted as insults for some odd reason. But relying on the good as a crutch to keep you going, while not acknowledging the bad and attempting to fix what is wrong doesn't really get you anywhere.

There is a pretty big gap between direct criticism and flaming >.>

Of course, those who don't know how to take criticism interpret almost everything negative as an attack/flame. :P

It's all discussion, nothing wrong with that so long as no one takes any of it personally :P

It's a fool's errand to try to please everybody. Granted, I'm very much the fool. :P

The proper aim, though, is to put on a fun and entertaining event, not a perfect event. For the most part, Michael has received far more complements than complaints, so I'd say he can declare mission accomplished for this year.
And considering how AX likes to boast the numbers pertaining to the amount of entries it receives, it makes it very difficult to believe that those were really the best.
The determination of what's "best" is a subjective one, and your tastes aren't any more valid or invalid than anyone else's. There were some exceptional vids that didn't get in, but that's only because the other vids scored higher. I wish there was more room in the categories for some of the others to have gotten in, but then that'd make for one excessively long competition.

If you ever run your own competition you're welcome to institute your own methods on how to cull the selection of vids, and I'm sure afterward you would endure a debate on whether those actually were the "best" your show had to offer or not. :)

i didn't say people were flaming. i was talking about MY mind and MY thoughts. but since you inverted it just replace "forum flame" with an "overall negative view on the contest" which i choose not to harbor. if i feel something needs changing then i'll voice it in my own way, which probably doesn't mean using a forum debate.

and if someone doesn't respond to criticism enthusiastically it doesn't necessarily mean that they can't take it, it's most likely because of the way the criticism was delivered. if they don't feel respected then don't expect them to give respect in return.
