oh dear god finally D: i swear i didn't get this done soon, i was going to BURN the car i was driving. 11mpg out of a 4cylinder engine is just fucking ridiculous.

my boss let me use the shop at work(and the tools, and the boom on the tow truck as an engine lift, etc etc) which gave me the space and chance to take the bloody engine and tranny out of my little black Colt hatchback. replaced the transmission, installed a new clutch and pressure plate, and got it all back together and running.

i'm finally driving a 5-speed again :D no more automatic gas-guzzling piece of shit!

You sure there isn't something else wrong with yer car there?
My tiny 1.9L I4 with a 3 speed automatic gets ~27-28 mpg on average (think it's been as high as 33)

oh there's LOTS wrong with the car i was driving, but the mileage was primarily due to an extremely weak automatic transmission, and a complete lack of maintenance on the part of the old owners. they never checked the fluid level or condition, and never replaced the filter, so when i got it all you could smell when you popped the tranny dipstick was burnt transmission fluid. it took 2 quarts of fluid and a full bottle of Lucas Transmission Fix before it would shift without hesitating. i've put the minimum amount of work into it to get it running reliably enough that it won't kill itself anytime soon. but for the price i paid for it(180$ safetied and on the road), and the condition the body is in(PO fixed the rocker panels with newspaper and fiberglass :S they were nonexistent beforehand), i'm not willing to invest any more money into it than i have to, so i just put up with shit city mileage and didn't drive it very often.

hence why i'm so happy that i get to drive something else
