Please, now that's the over-rating we're talking about. 50 years of analysis! That would have to suggest the writer took 50 years to put it in there!
the Black Monarch wrote:Cowboy Bebop is overrated. Half of the episodes don't give any reason to be watched again, but the other half renge from comedic filler to emotional powerhouses on the scale of those in Evangelion. I'm glad I watched the whole series once through, but I won't watch it through again for a long time, if ever.
So if it lacks 50 years worth of analysis.......

Sorry, I just can't get over that.
the Black Monarch wrote:I've never heard good things about DBZ, so it can't really be called overrated. It's rated as being about as bad as it really is.
Here it's under-rated, fanboys over-rate it..
the Black Monarch wrote:What I've seen of Mobile Suit Gundam, 0080, and 0083 was boring. The last episode of 8th MS team was damn good, though. I'd have to do more research before forming a real opinion on any of them.
Aww, come on, Gundam rocked!
the Black Monarch wrote:Inu Yasha is definitely underrated. I've heard nothing bad about it, but it's less well-known than most. It deserves more popularity than it currently has.
It's all opinion really...

Anyone who thinks Eva is overrated is too shallow to deserve to see it. Eva is for people who want their tears jerked and their minds warped. It has more layers and mysteries than 50 years of analysis will uncover. Its implications are as profound as those in any religious text, which it probably would be if it was written instead of animated.
Indeed, that was sort of what I was getting at. But I didn't think anyone would really care because they've already got their minds set. And I don't really like calling people "shallow" but hey, that's just preference  . 50 years is exaggerating, yeah, but it does involve a lot of thinking and is more in-depth than any anime I've ever seen or heard of. In fact, it's more thought provoking than any movie I've seen and many texts I've read. It was, however, lacking intense sadness that some other anime have :? . A lot of people I know just couldn't really get close to the characters and so, for them, it wasn't sad at all.

But, what are your problems with Evangelion besides the hype? I suppose it would be boring if you weren't really following the story or if that line of thinking doesn't interest you. But I fail to see too many flaws in it, looking from someone's view who doesn't like the series.

Mainly I disliked the characters, when you don't like any of the characters in something it's hard to enjoy it. I was following the story, and yet I just didn't really enjoy that either, yeah it's deep and complex but that doesn't neccessarily make it good. It just wasn't enjoyable, interesting to a certain extent, but I hardly think it's as profound as you say it is.

It wasn't happy, or sad, just odd... the long periods of silence throughout the series, I don't know whether they were there to build setting, or for dramatic effect, just seemed to slow down the entire series, and make much of it boring, especially to watch twice. The animation was good, and action was reasonable, I just didn't enjoy the storyline, complex as it was, or the characters, as crazy as they were.

But it's all opinion, and shallow is definately not the word, I understood all of it, and a lot of its philosphical roots, yet I don't care much for it, I hardly believe that makes me shallow, like the usual eva fanboy's comment:

'if you did'n't like Evangelion, you must've not understood it' or 'you must be too stupid', as though if you understood the plot there's no reason to dislike it.

I didn't like many of the characters either, but I was still deeply moved by much of the dialogue and deeply fascinated and intrigued by much of the story. That's all I really care about. There were some likeable characters, too. Misato is both naughty and nice, she's always there when Shinji needs a pep talk, she doesn't take crap from other people, and she doesn't let her personal problems interfere with her work. Rei is the ultimate tragic character, created as a tool, deprived of a normal life, and yet always willing to risk or sacrifice herself for others; and you can't help but feel something for someone who is feeling for the first time. Even Shinji has one or two admirable moments, like when he "rescues" Rei at the end of Episode 6 (not that she needed it).

You really have to look past the stereotypes to find the true characters.

Keeping that in mind, the characters were reasonably well developed, I just didn't like them.

Rei is too hollow, too empty, there's nothing fun about her. I just didn't like Misato, don't know why, just annoyed me.

Probably made worse when I randomly watched the dub on Sci fi. :?

Rei rocks!

Anyway, even if he did like those two, the others would be annoying to deal with. Frankly, sometimes I couldn't stand Asuka and sometimes she was just hilarious during the light-hearted parts. Characters were indeed extremely well-developed. But it is just opinion here, he's got his right to dislike.

But I still don't see why many people not only dislike Evangelion, but dislike it with an insulting passion. :(

I dunno. I enjoyed watching it once, although the second time was quite tedious. Random parts I would have a bit of fun re-reminding myself what the hell was going on :P , but in the end I quite enjoyed watching it once, but regret watching again.
