Re: Why do YOU Edit
I love anime and I love music... what other reason do you need? I guess it is pretty fun to try and turn the ideas I see in my head when I listen to music into an AMV.
I also like to edit to show off a new animes and try and get more people to watch them instead of staying mainstream and only watching Naruto and Bleach.
All the attention is fun too haha

I think at some level everyone has at least a little bit of this. Its great to hear praise for creating something that was fun to make.CodeZTM wrote:Although I'd be lying if I didn't do it for a little attention too. XD I always love hearing when people like/enjoy my work and felt something from it. I don't do it exclusively for this reason though. If I did, it wouldn't be any fun!

Re: Why do YOU Edit
I try to make amvs with a variety of emotions and story so part of it is to see peoples reactions and thoughts, other part of it is because I enjoy it.
Easy answer: Why not?
Easy answer: Why not?
"The people cannot be [...] always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented, in proportion to [...] the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions, it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to public liberty. What country can preserve its liberties, if it's rulers are not warned [...] that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants."-Thomas Jefferson

Why do I edit? Certainly not for fun and pleasure. The editing process is none of those. The fun stuff happens in the planning stage. The editing is a process by which I'm desperately trying to creative, which in my case basically means a lot of order and discipline. I just want to get the project done, just to make the idea in my head actually happen and be satisfied with the result. And ofcourse share it with the community

To get the ideas out of my head in a properly rendered fashion...Maddox said in one of his videos: "I could have written... remember that part where the kid drops the plate? Well imagine that kid singing the TMNT song over the intro. Hilarious right? No?"
"Uhmmm... You know... it was at that point that I realized that maybe Thierry wasn't actually a film maker, and he was maybe just someone with mental problems who happened to have a camera. " -Banksy

Re: Why do YOU Edit
At the most basic level?
I like having control over the synchronization/story/mood/etc. Forcing together two things that ordinarily are not together. Some of my favorite aspects of AMVing are things like internal synch, making an alternate storyline, or just plain making a video that is the opposite of the general mood of the anime.
Along with that, I enjoy challenging myself, and there's so much in this hobby that allows for that. Genres, techniques, concepts and such. Different sources, songs, time limits. There are a lot of ways I can challenge myself and improve.
And apparently I'm in the minority, but I do find the editing process to be fun. I don't have crashes/problems that a lot of people seem to have, so I just get into my tunnel-vision-editing-mode and I love it. If I'm not having fun editing a video, I don't edit it. There are exceptions, of course, depending on the situation, but I rarely force myself to edit.
And, lastly, the community. I seriously doubt I would still be editing AMVs (or at the very least, that my editing would've improved) if not for all you fine people.
Edit: Oh, yeah, contests. Sure, I enjoy them, but it's not my main priority. I only send if I'm either a) going to be there in person b) have friends that are going to be there in person or c) trying to help a coordinator I know fill out their contest when they are low on entries. I almost never make a video specifically with a con in mind unless I plan on attending. Contests are pretty low on my list of reasons to make AMVs, maybe a quarter of my 100+ videos have been submitted to contests, and the majority of those were sent to AWA over the past 5 years. >_>

Same here, I don't have to really force myself to edit, I really enjoy the process of creating a video.Ileia wrote:And apparently I'm in the minority, but I do find the editing process to be fun. Re: Why do YOU Edit
At this point in time I don't think I could stop editing if I tried. Even before I knew what an AMV was, I visualized scenes together with music, and it's gotten to the point of when I can visualize something to match the music, I might not even listen to it >>
But I do it purely for fun and I hope that it stays that way. I don't do it as often as I want, but I enjoy editing with shows like Pokemon or Digimon because not many other people do. If I can make Pokemon at least LOOK like a respectable anime to someone, then score.

Re: Why do YOU Edit
That's a really cool way of looking at it! It's not really what I'm after as editor, but I love watching people do that and pull it off successfully as a viewer. I wish more editors would think in those terms - but it does take a bit of talent to actually do it well.Ileia wrote: Forcing together two things that ordinarily are not together.
From my own view on that... I don't hate it because I have to force myself to edit - I know that I'll work obsessively and non-stop once I have the "artistic vision" or whatever you want to call it. When I'm ready to edit, no amount of technical frustration will actually stop me, and I rarely do run into tech issues. Sure they're frustrating when they crop up, and frankly I find solving any sort of technical problems (like how to do that one filter right, or tweaking with motion, or doing good encoding, etc. etc.) utterly boring/stupid/brain-numbing/energy-wasting, but that's not going to really stop me. And I love the feeling of having that drive to get a project done for creative reasons.
But the problem is that I find that tunnel-vision-editing-mode incredibly exhausting in the long run. Even when I do it well, it doesn't come naturally to me. I compare it to the same level of concentration as writing an exam - except it's like writing an exam that's a couple dozen hours long. Considering that my job/school already require a lot of concentration to begin with, the tunnel-vision-editing-mode just makes me want to pass out and never touch Premiere again by the time I'm done. I have very limited creative/mental energy, and editing consumes a lot of it when I do it. So I definitely admire people who can actually keep that level of commitment to editing (or other creative things) over and over - I would honestly crash and go insane if I edited even 1/10th as much as you (assuming I haven't already )
