Wouldn't really call this a vent but more or less put me in a bad mood...

Apparently something is going on at work and no one knows whats happening (at least my co-workers/supervisor). Last week, on my day off, my supervisor had told everyone in the office to go off site and wait there until he said to come back. When they were called back, they were told to meet up in one of the conference rooms where HR told them that my boss was put on administrative leave and he was advised not to speak with them during this time. If anyone asks about where he is, we are instructed to to tell him he is on vacation or not available. Weird stuff and it's rather bad timing too considering the city is in the middle of budget issues.

And then I received a call from an employer I've been interviewing for the last 3-4 weeks informing me that I had been rejected. I didn't catch the reason why. I don't really care why. I know I'm good at my job and I know I could've been a great asset to their organization. It's their loss. I was pretty excited about it though so I'm somewhat dissapointed.

As much as I love my job, it breaks my heart when I tell people they owe a substantial amount of money in taxes. Had to talk personally with a crier today. :(

It's just part of my job that I have to deal with.

Reminds me of that Mexican drama series that was popular in Russia when I was growing up, titled "Los Ricos También Lloran"

That reminds me, I need to do my taxes. Dislike.

Actually, it was someone that worked like 3 jobs. It's not just the rich that pay out the bum.

The poor/underpaid also pay out a lot. Mostly out of ignorance though. They don't hold out enough from their pay and don't keep records to itemize their expenses.

Ah okay, sorry if I came off a little snarky there >__> It irks me when people who are well-off complain, but I realize the story isn't always so simple.

I haven't had to pay taxes as yet. I honestly wouldn't mind it if I did, because at least it'd mean I'd be making a more sustainable amount of money than I currently am (which is would be well below the poverty line were it not for that trap called tuition/scholarships that look nice on paper and hardly do much in reality). Considering on average we pay a lot more taxes here in Canada than the US though, and I shudder to think what some people here might pay if they're well off. Unfortunately I also get fairly little money back, despite being flat broke and working my butt off. As much as I'll stand up for an honest tax system and the obligation of people to support social services, I do hate how inefficient/ineffective the actual system often is. But it does genuinely irk me when people start complaining about not wanting to pay taxes at all.

I've even heard people complaining about getting a refund, on the principle that it was their money in the first place. I get the idea of wanting what you earn, but I wonder if they really want to live in a taxless society, or if they're just complaining because it's a thing to do. As for me, take my money, give me libraries and moderate law enforcement.

Reminds me I need to add what I owe in taxes to my budget for next month. Not looking forward to that. Really puts a damper in my plan to cut down my debt when I can't use that money towards my debt but instead to uncle sam....

I itemized before, wound up being only half as much as the standard deduction.... the joys of not owning much that I can expense out

So this week I get back to work and i'm told they have this little side project they want me to work on. I need to reproduce this system that I cobbled together from spare parts a month or so ago and this time i need to make two of them. That's great, I think, I documented the whole process and made simple build instructions - I'll have this thing done by the end of the day on Tuesday. Look at the servers they gave me, and the disc geometry is all wrong for my ghost images. Okay, I think, that'll set me back a few hours while I dig out the old OS build instructions from 4 years ago. Manage to finally find them, use them to install one of the boxes. Instructions were incomplete and incorrect - had to manually tweak some things, but I manage to layer some of the software onto the box before coming to the realization that one of the suites of software has been through a major overhaul and isn't exactly compiling correctly due to bad links. Takes me several attempts and several hours to finally get the thing going by about 10AM this morning. It's still not 100% at all of the functionality, though - something was left out of the build apparently. Fine, I think, i'll just forget that portion of it and make sure if the underlying code works. Try to bring up the software and constant crashes greet me. After an hour of cryptic debug scouring (this is software that was deprecated 2 years ago) I realized there was a piece missing from the hardware that, while not necessarily needed for this application, the old code was written entirely around the idea that it was there. My previous, much longer effort at hacking this system together, just ignored the functionality of the missing piece of hardware, since we were reusing old pieces that we had no other use for. The new boxes weren't old hardware - they were newer and couldn't fit all the parts in, so they never installed them. So here I am an hour before quitting time with about 20,000 lines of obfuscated C to sift through, trying to figure out how to make this stupid software do something it was never designed to do.

Fun go-along to the above - I've been pass-out exhausted all week. I honestly think I need to get my thyroid levels checked again. I've been finding it hard to stay awake for normal amounts of time since right before Tekko.
