Below is a simplified "quick reference" version of the official 2012 rules, archived here for posterity. Note: The simplified rules do not negate the full rules. This version is merely for easier reading. In the “spoiler” tag is the complete verbose version of the rules. The parts in blue is the “quick reference” version.

---RULE ONE:
No video may be longer than seven minutes.
You may send your video to us in two ways – Either by mail, or online.
IF BY MAIL:
Your AMV must be on a file burned onto a DVD recordable or CD recordable. No tapes (VHS, DV, etc.), no “set-top playable” DVDs, and no Blu-Rays. Include a printed submission form with it. Feel free to fill the disc with multiple different encodes of your AMV. We will use whichever works best and/or easiest. See below for accepted file formats and codecs.
IF BY ONLINE:
Upload your video to a cyber-locker (other than rapid-share) or FTP site (we will not provide one for you). However, you must still fill out a submission form and mail it in (* exceptions will be made for international entrants. Contact amv[at]spja.org for details). Be sure to write the URL to your AMV on the form. See below for accepted file formats and codecs.
ACCEPTED FILE FORMATS AND CODECS:
For video:
Divx/Xvid (.avi file container)
H.264 (.mp4 file container).
MPEG2 (.mpg file container)
DV (.avi file container)
For audio:
PCM/WAV (Uncompressed, 44.1khz OR 48khz)
NOTE: If you are submitting by mail, you may include on your disc additional copies of your submission in ANY video/audio codec and file container you prefer, such as Lagarith, UT, MKV, etcetera. We will use whichever works best and/or easiest. At least one copy of your submission must conform to the accepted formats listed here though.
ACCEPTED FILE RESOLUTIONS:
640x480 (Square pixel, 4:3 aspect ratio)
720x480 (DV non-square pixel [0.9])
960x720 (Square pixel, 4:3 aspect ratio)
1280x720 (Square pixel, 16:9 aspect ratio)
1440x1080 (Square pixel, 4:3 aspect ratio)
1920x1080 (Square pixel, 16:9 aspect ratio)
ACCEPTED FRAME RATES:
23.976fps (24fps) or 29.97fps (30fps). Interlaced submissions are accepted, but progressive is STRONGLY recommended.
Note: We will not accept blame for submissions that suffer from reversed field issues. We will, however, do our best to prevent this problem. Please do the same.
HOW YOUR VIDEO WILL BE PLAYED:
All videos that make it to the finals will be burned onto a playable DVD. Any video resizing and frame rate conversions necessary for this purpose will be performed.
Only four entries total may be submitted per person/group/team.
Per category, only two entries from any single person/group/team may move onto the finals. (So if you entered four awesome vids in drama, only two will go on.)
No intros, lead-ins, lead-outs, overlays, studio banners or studio logos. No MTV-style text in the corner detailing the song title and whatnot, no personally identifiable information, no anything that breaks the anonymity of your submission.
Your submissions must have good audio and visual quality. If your video hurts our eyes and ears, we may reject it. We’ll try to give you one chance to correct it if the submission deadline has not elapsed set (Hint: send your videos EARLY).
Any entries you send to us will not be returned, so don't send us your one and only copy.
You grant us complete permission to play, copy, and use your submissions in any way without any strings attached.
All judgements and decisions are final. Also, we will not be obligated to ship any prizes awarded, so send a proxy to claim it.
At least 75% of your submission must consist of Anime or Video Game footage. That said, you may use other forms of content within that limitation.
With the exception of the FUN category, no less than 90% of your video must have music to it.
A submission deemed to be a "troll" will disqualified. We consider trolls to be a lazily edited (or "zero-edit") submission, or a submission that was entered in a prior AX AMV competition, yet did not seek prior approval to resubmit.
Parodies belong in the FUN category. Music videos belong in the other categories. Know the difference.
(Legal stuff. READ THE FULL VERSION. Will not be summarized. It states our liabilities [or lack thereof] with regards to you and your video's participation in this competition.)
All mailed entries and submission forms must be postmarked no later than May 5th, 2012 and arrive no later than Friday, May 11th, 2012. They must be sent to the address at the bottom. US Mail and Fed-Ex delivery is accepted. DO NOT ship via UPS.
