I was kinda hoping that they would not accept his speech, though. I wanted them to fight their way out. But that would probably mean no coming back, so this is probably for the best.

as someone who has read the manga I won't comment on the syrum he took. However, note that in the past humanity's technology was somewhere around the Renaissance period of our time. They primarily used gunpowder weapons like rifles and cannons, and those were very ineffective against titans due to their regeneration. They learned about the titans weakness's over time but had already been nearly pushed to the brink of extinction by then.
