Colour outline

I'm looking to recreate an effect found commonly throughout this AMV. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Raiz5MAb98Q

The coloured outline is what I'm looking at, but I just can't figure out how I'm do create that effect. Any insight would be appreciated.

Would it just be a matter of using the mask I've created, importing the shape into photoshop, creating a plethora of colors then using the still images?

In After Effects: create new solid, mask out the shape (you could keep solid at 0 opacity while doing this and then just increase it back up later), duplicate mask and increase second one, change mode of second to negative, hope this helps.
