Iron Editor Videos now online...all of them

Post by VicBond007 » Thu May 15, 2014 1:42 pm

It may seem like yesterday to some of us old farts, but it's been over 14 years since the concept of Iron Chef AMV was just a twinkle in Daric's and Pat's eyes. One name-change and 20 gigs of AMVs later, we finally have all of the entries online! We are missing several entries (I think all of ACen 2004, and Nigel's AWA 2001 video) because as far as we know, those videos are lost forever. Hopefully someone will prove us wrong.

For Iron Editor news, we'll be using our website which should always be available at:
http://vicbond007.net/ironeditor

We are in the process of moving our old domain, ironeditor.org , to point to the new server, but we're taking it slow so that we don't break the databases behind it.

We'll be using the website to mirror Iron Editor announcements posted to animemusicvideos.org, as well as hosting the original mpeg2 files for the creators. If you have competed at Iron Editor before, check your animemusicvideos.org PMs for instructions on registering. Once registered, you'll be able to download all of your old videos to post on the .org or whatever.

There are no downloads on the website available to the general public at this time.

For the general public, we've uploaded all 142 (and counting) videos to youtube. The Iron Editor channel is here:
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgyulX ... nBA-CKT-Tg

As we get new submissions, we will post them here. The youtube channel also has a myriad of playlists set up, so you can watch all of the entries sent to an individual con, all of the entries sent to a single con across all years (for example, every video that's been featured at any AWA), and all entries sent to any con in a specific year (watch everything that happened in 2013). Video playlists are arranged as Intro>Runner-up(s)>Winner. They're listed a bit out of order because I can't find a way to sort how they show up in the sidebar, but they're all there!

Videos are uploaded in their original format. For almost all of them, this means SD 4:3 with letterboxing for widescreen sources. This is less than desirable for the 16:9 Youtube window, but necessary to preserve the original aspect ratio of some of our older shows which were commonly used as sources. No Dragonball pan-and-scans for us! For videos that feature NO 4:3 FOOTAGE AT ALL, they have been zoomed-in to properly fill the Youtube player window.

Against my better judgement, comments are enabled.

The site/youtube channel are only for official Iron Editor (formerly Iron Chef AMV) videos. Cons that host similar events, while flattering, won't have their entries hosted by us.

As of right now, there are no plans for us to post the original videos to animemusicvideos.org. That job sits with the original creators who are welcome to do what they want with their creations.

We hope you enjoy this archive and continue to enjoy the show!

Hmm.. I don't see anything on the channel from the one year Fanime held one. I was thinking maybe it was unofficial until I noticed that it's listed on the Iron Editor news site you linked. Are the videos from this particular Iron Editor lost, or just not up yet? Thanks. :uhoh:

FanimeCon 2003 is definitely in there. No intro, but both videos. I distinctly remember it because Justin lost by using ONLY the secret source and forgot to use the other sources.

Gah, derp. Apparently YouTube's search function is super persnickety and doesn't like searching portions of words... So "Fanime" yields nothing, but "Fanimecon" brings them up. My mistake! Thanks! Time to relive some nostalgia.

So I found out that Youtube has 2 bugs in how they handle SD video.

1) They honor 3:2 pulldown flags, so all of our properly encoded 23.976 videos are being treated as 29.97 which is causing stutter.

2) No matter what format/framerate, any video that's less that 720 pixels high, is automatically deinterlaced by dropping a field. So while 640x480 should look perfectly fine, it doesn't because their encoder assumes that everything 480p and down came from VHS tape.

Solution: I'm re-encoding everything to (needlessly) 720p and re-uploading it all. *FluttershyYay.mp3* This is gonna muck up video views/direct links for a while since there's no way to replace a file and keep the same link :P

All videos have been re-uploaded in all of their Funimation upsampled glory to fix the encoding issues mentioned above. All information has been re-entered. Playlists are being rebuilt now. If you favorited a video, youtube will say that it's down. You'll have to update you link to the "HD" version.

I asked to have my full name removed from those uploads (for....reasons. Plus it's spelled wrong anyway >_>) and I didn't get a response. Any way you can take care of that for me? Just "Ileia" is preferred.

Heh, thank you for doing this. I kept procrastinating putting Bridgets and my Iron Editor intro's up there, so its good to see them on youtube. :)

Once the dust has settled would you mind linking to our channel on the two intros? It's in my sig.
