AMV Rant pt. 2

Post by Sephirothskr » Thu Aug 07, 2014 9:53 am

I always have something to say. Here it goes again.

I am getting sick and tired of all of my friends and just about EVERYONE I know telling me that "AMV's take no effort to make! They're so stupid and easy!" Yet when they attempted to make one to prove me wrong, they ended up making themselves look like idiots and basically mocked my hobby. Do you guys know anyone else who constantly puts you down for making these? It hurts my feelings yet no one seems to give a crap about what I love to do. And if any of you are curious to see what my friend made purely to tick me off, The links right here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bvfukHUFvw

I just.. ugh. Any thoughts on this?

Without the text ramming the joke down your throat over and over that actually would have been a really funny video.

I saw the comedic elements in it. But the text is what got me mad. -_-

Maybe you need to get better friends?

Or, I dunno, maybe I just have awesome friends or something because I've never experienced this. Granted, most of the people I would show my videos to are people I've met through editing, but I have shown videos to other people who have little or no interest in anime or video editing and they all seem to respect the hobby on some level, even if they don't fully "get" it.

Seriously though, if your "friends" don't enjoy what you love that's one thing, and totally acceptable. If they actively put you down or insult you based on your hobby, rethink those friendships. That's not cool, that's not what good friends do. (Although you might also ask yourself if you're overreacting...I don't know the circumstances and I don't know your friends, or the tone in which they commented on the hobby, so it might be all in good fun or tongue-in-cheek in which case, take it on the chin and move on).

Although they may also be jaded from bad videos. Let's be honest -- a lot of popular AMVs today are...pretty generic. And with YouTube being inundated with editors churning out video after video of the same exact crap, it's not far-fetched to conceive of a casual viewer who knows nothing of the awesome, innovative videos from years ago thinking that it doesn't take much effort to make an AMV. (I wasn't able to actually watch through the video you posted 'cause I'm at work right now, but I don't think it's a coincidence that he used SnK, probably the most popular anime for generic, boring action videos today, as a source to "mock" the hobby.)

Haha. Yeah that's true. In my group of friends I seem to be the one everyone picks on. It's like, everyone I show my videos to respects that I work hard on them and even if they don't understand anime, they usually like them. But this group does the complete opposite. They watch anime but think anyone can do it and be good at it there first try. "Oh dude that's nothing." "Why do you spend 3 weeks working on something that you could do it 20 minutes?" "Editing isn't art, an idiot could do it"

Just the little things they say that piles on top of eachother that aggravates me. There like my best friends, but I hate this about them.

Can't say I've had this happen, but, then again, I tend to associate with mostly decent people.

Never had an experience like yours. Even when I was really bad no one (friends/relatives) told me that it was easy to make them or insulted me/my hobby in those ways.
Anyway, "AMV's don't require much skills to make", it's true, because technically speaking, that crap is an AMV, and the author has no skills.

yea that video is shit, so he is sort of right. AMVs are stupid and easy....but lets rephrase that a bit, shit amvs are stupid and easy.

Show him something like this, and if he still makes that statement he is trolling you, or just a moron.

I have friends who for some reason tend to dislike everything that I seem to either like a lot (while they don't even know then are introduced to it by me) or spend lots of my time on. For example I can't really imagine a reason why someone would just randomly talk crap about my favorite band every time they learn that i'm listening to them :| Or just like in your case, ridicule what I am doing (amvs) whenever they learn that i'm working on one or ask about my hobby. O well, not everybody is not a dick. But yo on the other hand I have friends who don't even watch/like anime or know anything about amvs, yet still tend to watch my videos and tell me that I've done a good job. So basically I don't think it has anything to do with the nature of the thing people are hating on, more with their own nature and personality.
