Cleaned the topic up a bit.

Re: The AMV Documentary
Talked some with Nio about this the other night.
We both agreed that there has to be a fine balance between talking about the history of AMVs, and the hobby itself, and the "characters" within the hobby.
To someone who has never seen an AMV before, or knows nothing of the remix culture, how do you present this so it's interesting, engaging, and makes them want to take part in it? Not that it's some kind of recruitment movie, but I want the hobby to feel exciting. I don't want an hour of some kind of boring history lesson.
More or less the questions I'm asking myself lately. Still not had a lot of time to watch some of the suggested docs and stuff people have mentioned here (refer to vent thread for ongoing water heater/moldy apartment saga), but I am certainly keeping track of all that you guys are mentioning.
Also it appears I missed some drama at some point. That's something else I don't want in the doc, drama. At least not the kind we are all too familiar with. Anyhow. :F

Re: The AMV Documentary
This is purely coincidental I was here so wow.
I doubt you will have use for it, but I have a lot of stuff from AWA 2006 (unfortunately hi8 so 360x240). A ton of editors faces stating who they are and why should we care, many of the AMV panels (most video is shit but the audio might be good for something).
I haven't watched it in years, but I had to go through the tapes for something else today, or should say I'm in the process. I know there's some interesting conversations about "where editing is going" and in 2006 that's a lot of different things from what's happening now.
I also have some miniDV footage from 2008. Some interviews with editors and random cosplayers, probably some AMV editor panels. I remember working with someone else on this but can't remember who exactly, and I have no capability to capture or even watch miniDV so I can't be sure on the content. I could mail them out to you if you want a hand at it though. These tapes I remember having professional equipment, including mic, but can't remember what equipment exactly. No lighting kit. Shot it all for some film school thing, have no idea how good it was since like I said, haven't seen it since 2008.
But worth a shot if you want it anyway.
Let me know if you're interested. hat.kris@gmail.com

Re: The AMV Documentary
Bah, no edit button for me anymore.
Just read more and probably won't need my crap, but it's there anyway. XD
Good luck with your project. I would like to see it when it is finished. =)

Re: The AMV Documentary
I would absolutely be interested in it. I also have a bunch of digital 8 footage from circa 2006-2008 of various cons, mostly AWA and Acen, (and if I recall correctly, Hi8 is the analog version of the same cassette?) I currently don't have the ability to capture either Hi8 or miniDV, BUT, I'm sure I could find a relatively inexpensive miniDV camera to use as a capture deck on ebay, as well as possibly a Hi8 cam. I'm not sure I can firewire capture Hi8 the same way without some sort of digitizer card though...again might be able to find one cheaply on ebay.
If you are willing to send them to me, I'm willing to spend the time trying to get them captured. They may be low res, but I think showing some perspective on the development of the hobby would be great. Somehow I also kinda like how some modern docs upscale and clean the footage as best they can and then put some grain on it...call me weird but it looks better than just sticking it in the middle of a black screen at it's normal rez.
