Monetize AMV

Post by AllegoryStark » Sun Feb 15, 2015 7:26 pm

I'm doing AMV for a while and each video, Youtube ask authorization of the commercial rights. First, can I a profit doing AMV ? If I can, where did I find the right of the audio and video ?

That would be very serious copyright infringement if you start monetizing your amvs on YT, because you do not legally own the rights to the sources you have used in them.

While other artforms can "get away" with monetizing derivative work (see: all videogame cover bands like Bit Brigade & Armcannon) it isn't very likely for AMVs because it's combining the work of multiple different parties AND using the original song. Maybe if one licensed the music appropriately from a place like https://www.songfreedom.com/ it would legitimize your video more, but there is no such website for licensing anime.

There's also this resource for Creative Commons Licensed Music (though you'd probably violate most of the conditions by trying to monetize): http://creativecommons.org/legalmusicforvideos

if you use unlicensed audio like in youtubes music library, and original animation. Then yes, you're good to go!

i should revise my last post and say that there are editors who have, not consistently or to the point where it's worth looking into.

You can profit from an AMV. Just get the written ok from whoever owns the rights of the anime in Japan as well as the artist of the song you are using. Good luck with that.

Also because you'll most likely post it on YouTube, Google will want a cut of whatever money you make from the ads. The anime rights owner will want a cut as well. Oh and of course the musical artist will ask for a percentage or so.

Most likely not. I lost my old YouTube AMV channel years ago due to copyright infringement. :(

US distributors like Viz and FUNimation are cool with AMVs, but the Japanese parent companies like Toei, etc are not.

Shhhh I was trying to give OP a 0.00001% chance that maybe they could monetize if they do get the rights.
