Well, I think legal action on this would be a bit to extreme as AMVs are already kind of on shaky ground... Awareness amongst the community is the best thing

Vlad
I agree. Complaints through e-mail and social media would end up getting the point across, and definitely pass the word out to anyone and everyone you know in the AMV hobby who hasn't seen this yet.

How do you even explain this in court?

BasharOfTheAges wrote:As I said via PM, the content of the videos are immaterial. Their presence combined with their attribution to their respective creators imply consent and endorsement of the event within the rule set established by the event by said creators. That can constitute impersonation, fraud, libel/slander, etc. Check your local statutes to determine applicability.

EDIT - Under the advice of council, I'm going to remove myself from this thread.

You might want to not care one bit about local stuff. I hope I won this contest, I'd be sad if they didn't find me online :(

From the look of things, this looks like a showcase where people vote for their favorite?

That's an awful waste of paper and pencils if you ask me. :nono:

Oh Tsukoni-con?

My video won best in show last year, without me entering, i have the same story. :D About 2 weeks ago I was e-mailed that they would like to show it at the screening again, before contest :D
I don't know, I've never even found any info about this con, isn't it rather something like they collect a bunch of amvs and host a viewers vote?

GloryQuestor wrote:As a community, all we can do is not submit anything if these people are still in charge next year.

Anyone who submitted videos to this convention should use the e-mails above to the contest coordinators with CCs to all the convention chairs, leaders, and/or governing board, and make a legitimate plea to have these practices reviewed and the contest rerun and re-scored by an independent panel or group. It's only fair to request this, as they had no right to "cook the books" with videos from creators who never gave them a submission form or indication.
I completely agree with you. This is unacceptable for a contest to throw in videos that they please just because they did not get enough "good entries" or whatever the case may be. You do not throw videos that were not submitted by the editor into a contest. It's not fair at all. So I for one will be putting this contest on my Black-list of do not enter contests. There are very few that have made me put them on that list.
Vlad G Pohnert wrote:As mentioned, I also highly suggest writing a letter to the con if your video was in the contest and make sure to cc the Chair of the con... Make the letter polite and to the point something like Victoria wrote...

my issue is this is totally not fair to those that legit submit something. How easy is it for a AMV director to pluck videos from the internet and stack them against true submissions... And this is called an AMV contest.. the menu selection that takes you to the rules says "AMV Contest"...

I talked to them a few years back, and they brushed me off in their forums and pretty much insulted the AMV community that we are too arrogant and who the hell are we to tell them how to run their contest... Hopefully those people are no longer around and it's more ignorance than anything

I do love this part quoted right out of their rules:

"YOU MAY ONLY SUBMIT VIDEOS CREATED BY YOU. Pulling videos from other creators off the internet isn’t cool and trust us, we’ll know if you ripped off someone. If you do this your “submission” will be disqualified. Ever heard of plagiarism folks? Submitting someone else’s work as your own is plagiarism. And we’ll take it as seriously as the University of Victoria takes it. (Ironically, every video is plagiarism because of copyright laws. Lol!)"

they don't know the meaning of what Plagiarism means (an pretty much state that is what we do) as they are confusing it with Copyright.

Vlad
Couldn't agree more. Yet they been doing this for years now.

Yeah I am strongly against legal action here. Please do not bring this to court. We don't want to draw more attention to this site or the AMV Community in general. This could do some serious damage. The way we make sure this con stops what they are doing or hurt them where they don't have a contest anymore is by taking it to twitter, facebook and other AMV Community Forums letting them know what happen. BLACK-LIST the contest and tell your friends not to submit. When you're at conventions with other editors inform them what this convention has done for the past 4 or more years. However if they do change and run a legit contest it is up to the editors if they want to submit again.
