For future reference, I highly recommend not using scenes from anyone's stuff. It's good to be original. Even starting out, I never did such a thing. Ever. And I understand you put hours into your video, but some editors put weeks into them. Think of how hard she might have worked to make those awesome scenes. You could also spend a lot of time trying to make them. Get inspiration off of her, and try doing something similar yourself rather than copying. I get a lot of inspiration from others and that inspiration usually turns into something creative and unique rather than copying. Just keep that in mind man :).

Hi Bored1, I've sent you a private msg on youtube 2 weeks ago but you never saw or didn't read it cause I didn't get any reply so I decided to look around abit and I found this thread, either way I hope you read this.

I will start off by saying that i'm really sorry, it was never my intention to insult you or your work, you are an amazing editor and I would never want to do that but I did and trust me i'm not proud of it. When I started making that AMV, I took those few scenes simply cause I couldn't edit that that good (and trust me I tried really hard) and they fit so well with the song, your AMV was kind of base/inspiration to start my own, at the time I though I was doing nothing wrong, just taking few scenes but I pretty much, well used your work and I feel like shit right now. I still put hours and hours into making of that AMV, I worked really hard on it but it doesn't change the fact that I used some of your work.

One thing I wish is that you msged me privately and not shame me publicly cause I'm sure would we would work something out, I was even ready to remove vid if was really bothering you too much but maybe i deserve it, maybe I should have asked for permission at the very least, I should have known better than this.

I think that's about it, just wanted to let you know that I'm sorry and if you want me to do something with the vid just send me a private msg here or on youtube.
Yeah I definitely didn't get any messages. And to be fair you took an amv that took me 3 months to make :/ even if you spent hours on yours. And most of the parts you stole are the parts that are highly edited and look nothing like they did in the anime. More than you stealing my vid XD I hate the fact that you ruined some of transitions I worked really hard on. As for the excuse that my parts worked really well in your vid, I wouldn't say that bc they were synced to a different song so in reality it would have probably even been better for you to edit it with your own work. It would have flowed better. Mashing already edited amvs to a different song just doesn't work. I'd prefer you take it down but you apparently knew stealing it was wrong based on your posts so not sure why you did it, not like I can control people lol. Just keep practicing and you'll find your own style. I mean it took me like 80 vids before I was able to make a watchable amv. You won't be able to grow as an editor if you rely on other peoples work. Just don't give up and keep editing......and don't steal.

In a hobby where people have historically created derivative works without permission, is it fair to require anything more than attribution when amvs are themselves used in new derivative works?

(Yes, I realize the video discussed in the last few posts was not properly attributed, but people have suggested removal rather than ask for attribution.)

Indeed. I never ask anyone to take down a video/edits of mine (at the most, I'll ask to be credited). I don't get how people can justify demanding that. I'll see the same editors who do that also complain about copyright strikes, it's very hypocritical.

agreed. although attribution just out of courtesy for the community.

there's no amount of "altering" (even to the extent of Umika) that makes editing with another's amv any less justifiable than editing with anime in the first place. we simply remix already created art. to put things into perspective, Ponyo had a budget of $34 million.

Yeah I get what you mean. I normally don't ask people to take them down either but since he asked I thought I'd give it a shot. Plus I didn't really demand it I said prefer he can do what he wants, I mean we all do lol. Guess I'm defensive because that vid was a ridiculous amount of work, because I gotta be annoying and do this stupid scene merging I'm obsessed with @_@

I wasn't referring to you specifically, just in general. Anyway, as slimed pointed out, the amount of work that we put into AMVs pales in comparison to the production of the anime and music themselves, which we use with no qualms. Some perspective is always good.
