Excruciatingly Long Videos

Post by SF3P0X1 » Thu Apr 16, 2015 3:13 am

What's your limit on song length for a video? Do you cut your songs, or do you use the full song?

Personally, I use the full song. I hate trying to cut a song's length and trying to match up notes. So the thought of producing a video for THIS SONG both intrigues me and scares the crap out of me at the same time.

I'd like this to be a discussion, but I wouldn't mind seeing someone attempt to use that song for a video.

I saw a 14 minute Ah My Goddess video at a con once. When it was over, someone yelled "STAY DEAD!".

This is probably one of the most popular "long" videos at 25+ minutes.

You should make your video as long as it needs to be. If you can't edit to an entire song or find a way to cut it off at a logical point that won't leave your AMV looking like a half-finished project, then you may want to reconsider your whole concept.

Do you have a limit?

I personally try not to pick songs over 4 minutes long. I find I lose my steam after that point.

It's a standing joke, at this location, that we just Take as Long
as needed to "get the message across" and that Someone turned THAT into meaning "a song's length."

AMV's are not unlimited messages; that's what Utube is for!

This Org was put together to help people fine-tune hone and
figure-out what the Best Way Is to create statements via Edited
Footage. DVDs and How To rip'em used to be a Skill all in itself.

The most successful AMVs I've ever seen here were actually
less than 2 minutes long. Mombo-Mombo Nights, Do You Really
Want To Hurt Me, Bambi VS Godzilla, and of course the one that
started it all - Ranma 1/2's A Solute To Cats.

Just remember, regardless of its content; people have to Watch
It and 99.999% of us have a 45 Second Retention Span.

I remember a uber long Macross Plus AMV that wouldn't end...

I actually loved making longer AMVs back in the day being able to tell a story / take the viewer on a journey. Current gen / fans are too ADD to sit thru much of anything over 4 minutes.

At least of the 800+ videos I've watched from the past 15 years, they're definitely getting shorter.

Also relevant:

People seem to like longer videos more, in general. Although both are comparatively small sample sizes (and the second graph has some pretty large discrepancies in sample sizes between length groups), so take it all with a huge grain of salt.

A relevant graph from AMVNews Youtube channel. Lengths distribution of 200 most viewed videos. The timespan is about the last 1,5 years.
Image

The most typical AMV is about 3 minutes long nowadays. Less than 2:20 can be considered short and more than 3:30 lengthy.
The longest videos can be the most beloved in terms of audience retention and likes if they are hell-style comedies or cycle-that-move-style dance videos.
