As far as "Comedy" is concerned, maybe its a stigma of being "last" in the contest? Everyone knows that it is Comedy's job to "clean up" the contest, and maybe editors are too scared to submit to it? (or something). It might be a better idea to reorganize the categories, instead of complicating the rules. If Comedy doesn't get a lot of entries, maybe it should be "Upbeat / Comedy" as one category, and "Action / Dance" as another?
Then you run in the opposite direction, where too many entries will be in one combined category. At Nekocon 2008 my Dragon Ball Z video ("Earth's Last Hope") got royally screwed when the Upbeat and Action categories were combined and had 12 entries, and I ended up finishing a dull 6th out of 12, and two out of the top 3 videos were clearly upbeat videos, one using Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.

I would much rather have a more balanced set of categories, or at least minimize the lopsidedness that can happen occasionally when a lot of videos in a single category scored well enough to make finals (like what happened in 2012 for Otakon's contest).

Please don't quote me on this as VicBond sets the playlist ahead of time....

Traditionally, the playlist is built according to the Studio Name in alphabetical order. If you are present at one of the Non-finalist showings and you want to have your video shown while in the room, just come up to the desk and request your video, and we'll queue it up for you. If somehow your video just showed when you make the request, we may decide to run it again after a few videos have passed - it will be up to the discretion of the person running the board (most likely VicBond).

One final thing before the con: any word on the DQ list for this year?

TnAdct1: I know of at least 1 video that got disqualified. We are not kidding when we mention that the fastest way to get your video disqualified is to include watermarked footage, even for one second. Some people think we kid around on it and will try to slip one short scene past us. Nope. You'd think with a high-profile contest as Otakon that they'd be able to get access to clean footage, but nope.

Is this a contest-specific thing, or a general room policy for the whole weekend?

Contest specific. You submitted to the contest, you get perks for the contest. Handing out bitchin' seats for the whole weekend is a bit overkill

Totally reasonable. Just asking since the post meanders a bit and it's hard to fully pin down context. (Not even winner announcements though?)
