Realistically however, if actually looked at the way the region laws are spelled out, it is neither illegal to own a foreign regioned DVD player or DVD. The laws are merely inplace to make it difficult to import movies. And really the region laws are inplace more due to bootlegging than actual importing it-self.

Umm...
You're making up your own laws.
Just because it's "not available in your country" doesn't mean you have a right to own a version that's not produced by the original license holders.
That's called "pirating" and it's "illegal" no matter what you try to convince yourself otherwise.

im probrobly gonna get flamed for this but so be it. Country A has a DvD series i would like to own while in Country B but Country B does not import this series ... so i take it into my own hands through contacts in Country A and procure myself a copy ... now if the copy WAS bought in a store that legitamately sells them in Country A .. is it wrong to have it shipped to Country B?
...the problem I see a lot is that many good amv makers think they suck, and many bad amv makers think they're good.

Pillington, bootleg DVDs are REGION FREE. Therefore, the region laws don't apply, if they even fucking exist.
Like EX said, it's illegal to own a bootleg DVD of an Anime series that hasn't been released here, since, you can import the R2 DVD from Japan.
Even though I own bootlegs, it's the only thing I can afford right now. I want the Evangelion R1 DVDs though..same with NTHT.

o my bad .. i reread the thread and missed this line
even so .. is it still ok to import stuff if your country doesnt have it? (were talking as long as it was purchased from a legal liscensed vendor outside of the country .. one where it is possible to find copies.)Just because it's "not available in your country" doesn't mean you have a right to own a version that's not produced by the original license holders.

...if you get the R2 DVD of the Anime if it has or hasn't been licensed/released here, it's okay. Some companies (Like Manga and their WoH release) butcher the R1 release and make it crappy looking and shit.FATTY_VM wrote:o my bad .. i reread the thread and missed this lineeven so .. is it still ok to import stuff if your country doesnt have it? But if you buy an HK bootleg (Clues: Region 0/Region Free and Chinese subtitles) it's illegal if it has or hasn't been licensed/released here.

It's illegal to buy a bootleg DVD...period. It doesn't matter if it's licensed or not, as the US and Japan are both members of an international copyright organization. Sorry, that line ain't gonna work on this board, and encouraging bootlegs violates the forum rules.

So what you’re saying is that: If I were to live in said country for say.... 6 months out of the year, and the other 6 months I spent back in the good old US of A. I would not be allowed by law to bring any of my movies, players, or any other form of media equipment back and forth with me. (Which is a situation ripped strait from reality. Think about it.) Thus is the inherent flaw on the part of the regioning laws. Thus is the reason even if I were to walk in and purchase from yon store across the border no one could stop me by any stretch of any law. Now if I were to order across the net, a series that has been licensed by someone in my country, then yes that would be illegal. In other words my Region 2 DVD player was purchased legally by a resident of the country, and given to me as a gift. Let the courts try to rip it for me. And all the R2 DVD's were purchased legally by said resident. No money was exchanged for said object therefore no bootlegging took place. There you go, loop-holes in the law. So maybe it's not so much legal, as it is not illegal. And yes there is a difference.
Don’t get wrong, I have done my (un)fair share of HK purchases, but for the most part I try to stay with in the bound of yon loophole. Just in case.
