But prevents me from ordering the trophy until I know if a Parody or an Homage wins. I can't combine categories like that and still make my deadlines. The Wired Knight wrote:It gets a bit wordy but would it be better to rephrase it as "Parody or homage?"
This broadens the term so it is more understood that the category is not meant to strictly reward a comedic video.

I don't really think that anybody will care that their trophy lists a combined category. For other contests that have categories like "Romance/ Sentimental" or "Fun/ Upbeat", they never order the trophy based on what video wins. So regardless if a sentimental vid wins in the "Romance/ Sentimental" category, the trophy will say the exact same thing. So I don't really think that you need to wait to order them.jingoro wrote:But prevents me from ordering the trophy until I know if a Parody or an Homage wins. Not really sure why the topic of a parody category has caused so much discussion this year. If enough people had made parodies, then there would have been a category. But since they didn't, people didn't vote for one. That's just the nature of the competition, and none of the categories are immune to that. If only 2 people had made live action or trailer vids, those categories would have been cut as well.

I find it slipshod, and have never been a fan of the practice. This is why we have a Romance category at AWA, because too many fools were insulting romance fans by lumping it under Sentimental, where the first emotional tear-jerker that comes along would take the prize. That's crap. Not gonna happen on my watch.kireblue wrote:I don't really think that anybody will care that their trophy lists a combined category.
Because I asked for it, and because I'm facing a situation exactly like I just described, where non-trailer Parodies look to be screwed out of even a nomination because there's no category to support it if I go with "Trailer" and they're not outright comedies. Because last year I explained how fan trailers in general are parodies by their very nature, and people have pointed out I should be consistent. And I should.kireblue wrote:Not really sure why the topic of a parody category has caused so much discussion this year.
But mostly because I wanted to hear what everyone thought, so I don't make these decisions in a vacuum.
Ok, gotta ship this thing. I'm going with "Best Trailer", as voted by everyone. I'm sorry if this makes anyone feel denied an opportunity. We can hash it out for next year, as I mentioned earlier.

AWA Pro is open to all sorts of video editing. Every year there will be at least one video that doesn't fall into any of the chosen categories. So what happens to the more unique/original entries for that year? Seems like their only shot at an award would be Best Video.
Here's a dumb idea. Get rid of the category awards and leave editors to vote for the top 10 videos overall.

Well, I'm late for the party, but I would have thrown a vote for "Best Parody".

With bloc-voting coordinated with a wink and a nod does it even really matter? At least the way it is now, the audience has some variety in what they see in terms of genre.jingoro wrote:Not a dumb idea at all... comments, anyone? Then again, if people are just voting for Best in Show and 9 Runners up, at least 10 unique videos will play, rather than a few videos scooping up a number of awards and making the end presentation that much shorter. It also foils the meta-gaming of people trying to prevent 1 video from scooping up 5 awards.BasharOfTheAges wrote:With bloc-voting coordinated with a wink and a nod does it even really matter? A Runner Up Award, doesn't sound especially cool though.

Re: AWA 2016 The Video Art Track - Deadlines SEP 4 & SEP 13 [EXTENDED]
There are 2 major problems with the top 10:
The audience is not going to sit through 10 sappy sentimental videos. Most fans, as polling will confirm, come to be entertained. They want action, comedy or at minimum something upbeat they can groove to. Romance and sentimental categories often get sandwiched between these in award ceremonies because, as much as we love to edit them, come the 3rd slow, ooey gooey, cliched tract you're going to loose 2/3 or better of non-editors. Without randos butts in chairs there is no need for the show and no justification for the slot in general convention programming.
Also consider that many people have differing tastes. You're never going to get 2 editors to select the same 3 videos; let alone 50 editors picking 10. Many people have differing tastes and bias. You're going to have TONs of tie-breakers, likely even 3 to 4-way, with 2-3 votes each. From a logistical stance it only promises headache, and confusion throughout the community.
