Deep End (CON-NICHIWA 2017 Viewer's Choice: Drama)

This AMV was really hard to make.

I tried to start and finish this project three times, but each one of these were unsuccessful. Part of this is because anime and manga don't really ever cover the topic of eating disorders. They are few and far in between, and even then the ones that do bring it up do so very subtlety. This was one of the huge struggles with putting this together -- making a convincing and revealing AMV with characters that suffer from such issues.

This AMV is meant to bring awareness to the power of media, but most of all, to the fact that eating disorders can affect anyone, at any point in their life. The metaphor of the water reflects the hold of an eating disorder and how insidious it can be. Grasping for breath is extremely difficult, the current can be so strong. Even with the love of those around you, it is possible to slip into the deep end.

I hope all of you find hope from it and enjoy it. I hope everyone takes something from it.

Thanks for watching!

Considering what this amv is about, it's so surprising the kinds of scenes You used here from all those sources... so I'd say the scene selection, transitions, and atmosphere You set here is so praise worthy :). Very Well made ;) and Congrats on winning the Viewer's Choice Award.

Thank you Pysh. This was definitely the toughest part about this project. I tried making this AMV before Tokyo Ghoul and a lot of the other sources came out beforehand, but it didn't work out. There wasn't enough to truly play with, so I am glad I still planned for this concept. I basically kept a list of potential sources and episodes I found as I watched AMVs and anime.

This has been in the works for awhile and I am so glad that you and others appreciate the work that was put into it. Thank you!

This didn't hit me in a big, powerful sense like I feel it was trying to do, but it was thought-provoking in a way that I wasn't expecting -- I don't mean that as a generic compliment, this video is about stuff that I rarely ever think about and it did something to change that -- and I think that's a real achievement. It's definitely more successful than any other issue-oriented AMV I can think of.

You did a pretty great job bringing all these scenes together, I understand the challenge of making that work and even just finding this kind of material in the first place. I'm tempted to make a critique about this AMV (one that was too vague for me to understand or explain until now) but I feel like you're coming at this from a much more personal or invested place than I am and my nitpicking would be based on a ton of presumptions about what you were trying to do here that might not be true.

I especially like the ending, just kind of coming full circle back to how you started it, how you bring a sense of resolve to some people who are able to get help (later than they should have, but better late than never), while showing that the problem isn't going away any time soon. It's hopeful but...realistic, I guess.

Thank you so much seasons — that means a lot to me. I really appreciated your beta-test and I am glad that this AMV succeeded in what I was trying to get across (especially that hopeful, but also realistic message at the end). It is a hard topic to cover especially because there are so many outcomes. People can recover, pass away, and relapse. It was important that the AMV ended on this note, because there is still so much help that is needed when it comes to this issue.

I am interested to hear what your critique was. Please feel free to message me. I would like to have a greater insight on what others see in my work. Thanks again! :)
