Wait, this is just now being made public? I first read about this news ages ago.

Good thing I never said anything about it, I guess.

Is the AMV contest information that's currently on their site ( http://www.anime-expo.org/activity/amv_ ... /#maintab1 ) still left over from last year, or is that new?

I did mention it a while ago in a few whisper circles, but hadn't made any public statements until now because, if I'm totally honest with myself, I held a small ember of hope. Thus I held off on announcing anything until so much time to have gone by that we couldn't step in to help even if we were asked to. I don't like burning bridges unless there's no hope of repair.

Yup, that's last year's rules still up there, and there's no deadline or submission instructions as of yet. To be fair, perhaps the new coordinator is still getting settled in. I won't criticize until a point-of-no-return date is crossed, but one is coming up rather soon.

Reposting this from FB because I mean it; I really appreciated the opportunities you and the rest of the AX AMV team gave me. Hosting AMV Chef these last few years has been the highlight of AX and something I always looked forward to.

I wonder what will happen to the AMV room, if it will exist at all.
For certain, finding a successor to run that room will be a challenge for them. In fact, at other cons Vlad wanted to retire from, he had trouble finding and training successors that could continue running the room smoothly. I do not think AX will have better luck finding someone with emcee experience, crowd control expertise, A/V technical expertise, event programming experience, a 20yr library of AMVs to draw from, encyclopedic knowledge of them, and a repertoire of interactive activities focused around them.

Interestingly, I've heard that AX had recently reached out to our subordinate staff to see if anyone was interested in the role. I haven't said anything to discourage them from it, but to my knowledge, none have stepped forward.

AX will have much more luck running an AMV Competition than it will in running the AMV Theatre, unless they intend to run it video room style (I.e. just rip a bunch of AMVs from youtube, put it on a playlist and walk away), which would be depressing.

I want to thank you guys for hosting such a wonderful contest over the years. I am sad I haven't been able to attend AX since 2015 but never once did I miss the AMV contest from all the years I have gone. I started going in 2006 and I just grew to love amvs as the years went on. For a LONG time I thought you could only participate in contests that were local. My friends really wanted me to enter the contest and so I started submitting amvs via mail back in 2009. I have so many fond memories of the contest.

LOL the black out that happened in Long Beach and everyone took their phones out and started to make a sorta light show with them till the show started. Sitting next to Hagaren Viper and seeing his reaction to his amv and audience. Not to mention seeing his Soul Eater this is Halloween on such large screen in the Nokia theater. It was amazing! Watching an entire audience participating and laughing together with "testing is the future" amv. The amv Contest was always a highlight of my AX experience weather or not I made finalist.

I admit I never really got to experience the amv room much but when I did it was nothing short of amazing. The AMV team has always tried and did their darnedest to make things such a enjoyable experience. Despite tech issues and con related line shenanigans you guys always pulled through and made AX, at least for me, such an amazing and wonderful experience. I can't thank you guys enough for all your hard work and I am sad to see you go. Though I haven't attended AX in the past few years, I don't know if or when I will return,I hope the new AX AMV staff the best.
Seriously thank you guys and I hope whatever happens in the future may only be for the best and that all your future endeavors be great. Thank you for all these wonderful years of amazing amvs and shows!

Well. This is an extremely unpleasant surprise.

I haven't been actively entering contests for a few years now, but it impressed me from the first time I ever got to attend and compete, which was while it was being run by Troy and Vlad's AMV team. I imagine most editors who have attended were also motivated to come back, because as Troy just said, he always treated us like rockstars. I don't know what the motivation is behind the change that AX has made, but based on the info here, it was done with little to no consideration for what the team had done over the years for the convention. I admire the grace with which the former AX AMV team is handling it, but I'm personally disgusted that someone at AX thought this was an appropriate course of action.

I'm grateful y'all are still running Sakura-Con's AMV contest. I know where I'll be sending my future vids, and hopefully attending someday.

You guys may not remember me but I personally met several of the AMV staff back in AX 2016. I had a great time not only getting to meet new AMV editors and contest coordinators, but also drawing inspirational points from both the contest and the AMV room. For the past couple of years several AMV editors along with myself have been running our own AMV room to which we affectionately call the VES (Video Entertainment Showcase). And we're pretty stoked about what we have in store for this coming year. Like every contest, we too hope to bring in the best of the best AMVs to our audience. But its been your experience which we've been able to take from that is helping us to reach that goal.

I'm sorry to see this happen to you guys. And I wish you all the best of luck in your future endeavors and contests. If nothing else, please take solace in that you have been in inspirational force for our Mid-Western based AMV contest and AMV room.
