GHIBLI/MIYAZAKI WARNING...

Post by Silent Hero Studios » Sat Feb 15, 2020 4:30 pm

It's come to my attention that certain Ghibli and/or Hayao Miyazaki AMVs have been deleted and taken down from YouTube. About a year and a half ago, I made and posted a 'Ponyo' AMV onto YouTube, and for a while, there didn't seem to be any issues. However, almost a year later, I found out it was deleted and taken down YouTube from someone (or perhaps the whole company) at Ghibli themselves, and as a result, I got a copyright strike. That really pissed me off.

Now I've just found that another AMV by Opner, "Chihiro In Wonderland", using 'Spirited Away' as the source, has just been recently taken down from YouTube by Ghibli as well!!

It is an utter outrage that they just wait while nobody's looking to just delete these types of videos out of the blue, and they end up striking you for it!!!!

Although, I'm not exactly sure if the AMVs that get deleted are a result of them being from Miyazaki or Ghibli altogether... I just don't know. So this is just a warning if anyone's got any Ghibli AMVs in mind, just be real careful about your sources.

Any thoughts?

Ghibli videos have never been completely safe on YouTube, this is nothing new. I've noticed that such videos often get taken down. Not much you can do, unfortunately.

Yep, this is unfortunately a thing with Studio Ghibli content on YouTube. In my experience, whether the video gets taken down seems to depend on how easily the footage can be identified as Studio Ghibli. I have so far uploaded two AMV's using Princess Mononoke, one was taken down as soon as it finished uploading, so that will never be on YouTube. The other has been ok just over two years now.

It's a sad situation but definitely one of those things we have no control over.

Yeah, but one thing boggles me. As I said before, is it because it's Miyazaki or Ghibli itself, b/c I was able to watch this on YouTube the other day:

It's from Ghibli, but not directed by Miyazaki. And this has been up for like 5 years.

You see my point here?

If you're looking for consistency in the algorithms that determine what gets taken down and what doesn't, you're wasting your time :P There are tons of Ghibli AMVs on YouTube that use Miyazaki-directed footage, and many AMVs that use the exact same sources get taken down. You'll drive yourself nuts trying to determine why one stays up and the other doesn't.
