I have not made an AMV or been involved in the community for years, but like others, got a notification via e-mail and decided to check it out.

Alan thank you for your efforts in recreating these. It was a trip down memory lane. For some, these memories go back almost 20 years and it was great to relive them again.

Take care!
Man, it's so fun seeing these old names popping up. These vids were all a total nostalgia trip for me. Glad to hear from you again!

First of all there's the nostalgia factor. It took hold right around when Rammstien was getting big, combined with being one of the few competently edited videos to their work it got super popular so a lot of people loved it.

Second is the lip syncing. I agree the technical aspect of this could have been done better, however I adore the scene selection in these parts as I feel the characters expressions are very well matched to the tone of the song/video. I especially enjoy when Shinji is the one singing.

Third the tone of the video. This is something I can see people getting confused at. Overall the video is quite tongue in cheek but it does also get a bit heavy, I quite like the balance between these two that the video has.

Finally, probably one of my favourite parts of any AMV is 2.19 - 2.28. The clip is onscreen for almost 10 seconds and it manages to sync to two different people singing, plus the little pop sound at the end. Now I have no idea how much the clip is edited to fit that, but still it's something that has inspired some of my own editing style.
There is no doubt this video enjoyed massive popularity back in the day, and it deserved it. It was a fun and entertaining video using both an anime and a song that people loved. And it was able to break through that barrier of just being popular among AMV fans, and become known among anime fans in general.

I agree that some of the lip sync scenes are chosen well, although none of them are particularly well-made technically. However, I think there are also several scenes that are chosen horribly. Like, the whole section with Misato and that ship captain who randomly appeared in that one episode. WHY is that even in the video? WHY did we change away from lip synching Asuka and Shinji to these 2 characters? And WHY do both Misato and the Captain lip sync to the same voice?!! It's as if he just put that in as a placeholder clip and then never found anything to replace it with.

The scene you enjoyed at 2:19 is fairly straightforward, just a few simple cuts, no masking or anything (I believe there was only a single scene in the whole video that used a bit of masking). The technical inaccuracy of the lip sync in general is one thing that really bugs me about this video. For the most part, he just lets clips run and the flapping lips manage to sync up fairly well. There might be a few cuts here and there to keep things looking alright, but that's about it. This is in contrast to the Believe video, where the lip sync was carefully done frame by frame. I just really think that a lot of the lip sync in Engel could have been much better if he had spent only 5-10 more minutes on each scene... that's all it would have took!

And that is mainly what bugs me about this one. It's the only one of his videos where I have thought, "man, if he just spent a little more time on this it could have been so much better".

In what must be a cruel joke being played by the gods, it appears that Kodocha will be coming out on Blu-ray later this month.
I guess I'll have two re-remasters coming soon. I just hope they include the clean opening, or else I'll still have to mix laserdisc footage in with it.

Holy crap man, this is the first time in a loooong time that I actually came to download stuff here.

Also, years ago I wanted to make parody DBZ versions of Kevin's videos. I still laugh when I think about the DBZ Phantom of the Opera Parody, but I'm too lazy (and retired) to actually edit them.

Kevin Caldwell's Phantom of The Opera was one of the major influences in why I became an AMV creator and how I approached my early AMVs. Watching it again in HD just now brought back tons of memories. (no pun intended)

Thank you for that. Good job.

Wow man, that could have been incredible! Now I'm wanting to see that!

I just binged watched all of them last night. It felt like I was watching the remastered editions of Star Wars without all the added unnecessary stuff. It must have been insane remastering all the specific effects in Believe and in Davinci Resolve no less! I used Davinci Resolve last year and I felt that for every step in premiere, resolve took 3 steps to do.

Thanks for doing this, Alan.

Resolve is actually really nice for basic editing and I think I prefer it to Premiere now. It has a "cut" page now that gives you two timeline views at once, so you get a zoomed in view and a zoomed out view of the entire timeline. So you can edit without having to zoom in and out of the timeline constantly (something I would have to do with pretty much every single clip in premiere). Learning Fusion to do stuff that I used to do in After Effects was a real pain though :|
