The attendance at AX was what always set it apart for me. It attracted the most attention from AMV creators and I think the last year I went had like 3000 seats. I went to Fanime for years after I stopped going to AX because I liked the smaller fan feel of that convention better, but the AMV contest never quite had the attendance or the devotion. To be fair Fanime's main even was clearly always the masquerade though. ..And Anime Hell. And the screenings of those amazing fans dub projects. I forget what the Neon Genesis one was called, but "...It's Gendo" will forever be seared into my brain.

...Found it, for years they kept it off the internet so it would be a live experience where it honestly probably works better. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JtXT-8C-6OE

...It's Gendo.

My recommendations for the contests to enter are SakuraCon, Anime Boston, Otakon, Momocon, Anime Weekend Atlanta, Anime LA, Animethon, Otafest, other folks feel free to chime in with what I missed.
Don't forget AnimeNEXT  Speaking of which, another thing that's happened since the early 00s is that more conventions have gotten dedicated AMV rooms. I know Otakon's began in 2014 and I got one for AnimeNEXT in 2019, and some others that I'm pretty sure weren't around back then include Kawaii-Kon, Nan Desu Kan(?), AX (but maybe not anymore now that XStylus and Vlad are gone), and many others I can't remember. So yeah, AMVs are still doing quite well at conventions.

We've had 2 rooms dedicated to fan video content (like AWA not just AMVs, though mostly) at Youmacon since 2015 and a dedicated room since 2007. A lot of smaller/younger cons I've also found have if not a room at least a programming track dedicated to AMVs and the like. So yeah, it's still going strong if not stronger then it was all those years ago.

It's more common for audio copyright holders to monetize your video rather than remove it and lose out on potential revenue,
These deals with the record companies seem pretty recent. A LOT of videos are permanently unavailable because they got DMCA'd back in the old days, and their creators never bothered to re-upload them.

We all should have just stayed on Limewire/Morpheus/Kazaa.
Ask me about my secret stash of videos that can't be found anywhere anymore.

Not that recent. This post was from a year ago, but the last time I had a strike/takedown for audio was 2013. I've uploaded 40 videos since then, it's always just claimed only.
