By the way though, thank you for reading the rules carefully! Not everyone does, so I appreciate your thoroughness.

Re: Tora-Con 2023 AMV Contest - Deadline Feb 4th
The contest is closed, and I finally just finished going through all of the submissions. We received a total of 81 entries, about half of which came in just the last 4 days before the deadline. Whew! Here's our final count for accepted entries:
Drama - 17
Action - 16
Romance - 14
Upbeat - 10
Trailers - 5
Comedy - 5
Tora-Con staff will be selecting the finalists this coming Saturday. I hope to get the ballots counted and let finalists know who they are by the end of Sunday at the latest. The finalist list will not be publicly released until after the convention.

Re: Tora-Con 2023 AMV Contest - Deadline Feb 4th
Hello all,
Actually, I JUST finished figuring out the finalists just about an hour ago! I meant to do so last weekend, but 2 things got in the way.
- First was that it turns out a lot of entries had won awards at multiple other conventions, which violates a very long-standing rule in our AMV Contest (this rule has been in place since before I started working for the AMV Contest back in 2013!). It was very time-consuming to go through and double-check every potential finalist.
- Second was that Sunday (and the rest of the week) ended up being much busier than I expected due to personal reasons. So, I was not able to finish checking things until today.
All contestants will be receiving an email later this evening with a list of the finalists, indicated using the ID #s that were included in each entry's acceptance email. I apologize for the wait!

Does the rule apply if we sent it in before it won a contest? I may have sent one when the contest got announced but it may have won a contest a few weeks later.

It applies to any awards won prior to the submission date of the entry. So if you submitted something and it won an award later in the week (or the announcement wasn't until later in the week at least), you're fine.
I am also only considering 1st place awards, nothing like "Drama Runner-Up", "3rd Place Action", etc. Maybe I am just out of the loop since we didn't have an AMV Contest for the last 3 years, but I don't recall ever seeing so many other contests with multiple award slots in a single category before this year.

omg I just realized I was guilty of this and didn't notice. Sorry for wasting your time like that, I'm usually REALLY good at reading the rules before submitting these days...
My sincerest apologies
Edit: (I had missed a contest I was in on my personal spreadsheet)

Might be worth adding a checkbox to the entry form if this has been a huge issue!Tora-Con AMV Contest wrote: ↑Sun Feb 19, 2023 7:49 pmHello all,

Yes, maybe I should... There is a checkbox already saying something like "I have read the rules" but I am pretty sure everyone just checks it and goes on their merry way... Not sure a second box specifically for that would help, but maybe it would catch a few people.
No hard feelings on people who didn't notice this in the rules and submitted anyway. I am fairly certain we are not the only contest that has a rule similar to this, but it is not super common.
What makes it hard is just that there's not really a single "database" where I can check what awards an AMV has won. My main strategy is:
1. Check the AMV if it is on YouTube, since some creators will list the awards it has won in the description
2. Search for both the editor & AMV name (using parentheses) in the forums here to see if they are listed as winners in any contests. This often means looking at multiple forum posts per each AMV since they may be listed as finalists in many contests.
3. Google Search the editor & AMV name (using parentheses) to see if it comes up on any convention websites that don't utilize animemusicvideos.org to advertise their contests.
I used to check the AMV info page here on animemusicvideos.org, but most people no longer seem to update with contest awards once they have uploaded their AMV.
It's a process.... ^_^;

This is also the reason why I usually wait until after the Judge's Screening to even bother checking previous awards. Checking 30-36 AMVs is hard enough, I am not going to check 70-80 ahead of time!
