Solution to Anime Convention Withdrawl in S. California
Are you suffering from Anime withdrawl?
Are you in Southern California?
Then come to Strategicon in Feburary! It's a Gamer's convetion, located in LA right near LAX, so it's local to almost everyone. At the convention people play role playing games, board games, computer games, and minature games, however they also have a 200 person theater where we show Anime for almost 2 days straight. We open the room on Saturday Feb. 15th at 9am and we run anime till Midnight on Sunday Feb. 16th. At 7pm both days we will be showing AMVs and Fan Parodys. (More details to come, and the hours may change some but the next California convention is Fanime and that's not till June, so can you really wait that long?!)

I hope some people come. If your going, let me know. If you want your AMVs shown during the AMV showing time slot and will be there, let me know or bring your vids on Tape. The room is actually a nice theater, with a big screen rear projector screen with built in sound in the room. It's what some would call a lecture hall, but with theater type seats. I'll have the schedule of what were showing finalized in a few days.

This is Otakudom
For those who want to see 'This is Otakudom' we will be showing it on Saturday at around 7pm. If you haven't seen 'This is Otakudom' you must see it. If you have seen it, you have to see it in a large theater with an audience. We showed it last time and it was HIGHLY popular. I believe we are the only West Coast convention to have shown this wonderful parody. If you have no other reason for going to the convention, go to the convention to see this!

Aroudn here, we have something called anime clubs. we all suffer from CWS (Convention Withdrawl Symptom) so I'm trying to organize a min-convention-like panel each month...
For people who missed "RSA Conference" or "Defcon", there's the 2600 meeting each Friday. For people who missted Otakon, there's Denver Anime, on the same friday, same time.
But what happens if I want to go to the 2600 meeting and the DenverAnime meetings as well?

West Coast
Well this is for West Coast people. It's an actual convention, which is far more then an anime club. Anime clubs don't tend to show 40+ hours of anime stright for a weekend. I would join an Anime Club but I'm out of school, and their meetings are not convient to my work schedule. So...
There will also be 'anime' type games to do at the convention...
There will be a Yu Gi Oh card game tournment.
There is also the Anime Role Playing system, Big Eyes Small Mouth, that will have a game or two during the convention.
Then there is always the computer room. Technically not Anime, but I know alot of us fall into the computer gaming geek realm very easily.

Fanime Con got its start as a conference of the SF bay area anime clubs. Someone had a connection on the CSU Hayward campus and got some space for the event. The rest is history.danielwang wrote:Aroudn here, we have something called anime clubs. we all suffer from CWS (Convention Withdrawl Symptom) so I'm trying to organize a min-convention-like panel each month...
There's no reason that you couldn't do something similar. It might be a bit much to make it monthly, since some clubs meet only that often themselves. Just organize the campus and community based anime clubs in your region to have an annual meeting all together at the same place. College campus space is pretty cheap, especially between semesters. Schedule it some months away from whenever the big con is in your area. There you have it! Instant convention!
There's a bit more work involved if you want a dealers hall or to bring in guest speakers, but you should start small. Don't try to be AX overnight.

Not a convention, but the things is, the point of anime clubs has always been to get anime out. Now that anime is out mainstream, what next?
Being a geeky person myself, I thought it might be nice to get some real content inside, like a convention except spread out and small-size. A mini-son, like you could have panels, VG, cosplay, and dare we say lectures and symposiums (like at NDK we had a Mythology In Anime MTP session.
The paradox is, you can't get content without customers. You can't get more club members without cool stuff, so the only way is to try to hold events where we have a turnout fluxing from 3 people (TRUE!!!) to 50 people (NOT likely), averaging at around 8-15 people each time.
Also, we have a lack of funding and other things. The club (I don't run it) is not using money. They simply meet at the local library on cheaply rented space, and WHOOPS we don't have unique content. Simply screening stuff isn't going to do.
Oh well. I haven't checked in for moths so they might already have this idea. But I'll propose it sometime, see if they might try adding content.
Thanks,
Daniel Wang
