I love networking!

Post by TokyoU15 » Sat Jul 27, 2002 4:52 pm

I just finished seting up a sharing network with all 3 of my PC's (actually, 1 i'm not gonna use I just did it for the fun it) but now I combining all 3 hard drives together I have a TOTAL of 220 gigs to work with. And just on time to, my latest project will use up atleast 80 gigs alone. This is awesome. And yes, transfer time is FAST! I'm not going to use avisynth or else that should would really slow it down, but this just rocks.

I'm going to have a lot of fun with this. THe best part is I'm going to upgrade my other PC to a Tyan Dual Proccessor Motherboard with 2 AMD 2100 Athlon MP's! With 3 gigs of DDR!!! this is sooo cool.

By the way, sorry if this is off topic, I only posted it to show how awesome it will be for future projects.

Yeeeees.

I hate networking. If one person downloads something the others crawl. :(

Watch me crawl.... watch me, damnit.

And what program are you going to be using to ensure that you'd be utilizing both processors, and what OS do you plan on using with 3 gigs of ddr ram? why the hell do you need 3 GIGS of ram? thats just insane overkill.

it probably is overkill, but just the thought of having 3gigs is nice. I most likely will just use 1gig for now. I love windows2000 so I'll be using that OS.

As far as ensuring that both processors are used, I don't know yet. It's not for certain so once I get the setup i'll let you know what program I used, if I even need a prog to make sure they both run.

Premiere, and any video-editing program that's worth anything (Cinelerra :P ) can make use of SMP systems. (Actually, anything that's multithreaded/multiprocessed, assuming it's written with such parallelism in mind, can benefit.)

And having 1 GB+ of RAM, if your system can do it, isn't really a problem. I don't remember the WinNT kernel being able to address anything more than 2 gigs, but I haven't been in the Windows world for a while, so that's probably changed.

Networks are always nice, theonly problem is that often you are sharing bandwith but when you consider how fast you can transfer between computers it's just sweet.

Actually, depending on the network topology, you aren't always sharing bandwidth. If, for example, you are using repeaters (or hubs, depending on your choice of terminology) to connect your LAN up, you are; however, if you fully switch an Ethernet LAN, you microsegment the thing and thus are sharing no bandwidth with any other computer. Full-duplex Ethernet helps this a lot, as well.

Additionally, WAN traffic is always switched in the above manner. (That's part of a router's duty.) So, no, networking does not necessarily share bandwidth, unless you go for the cheap setup. :)

I'm pretty new to this networking shit, it sounds awesome to not use any bandwidth! But unfortunatly I use a hub. Once I learn more about networking i'll take it to the next level but for now, this is good enough!
