encoding program

Post by Laven Atries » Sun Feb 02, 2003 11:45 pm

I'm looking for a program to either encode, or change the compression, or do something to change the format of a video file. I'd prefer if it ended up as an .avi or .mpg. I'm looking because I have some .avi files that premiere won't import without crashing, and I really want those files useable. I already have TMPGENC and that doesn't work. So can anyone recomend anything else? Highest preference is a program for changing compression of .avi files. Thanks!

Okay, I tried Virtual Dub, but get an error message:

Couldn't locate decompressor for format "DX50" (unknown)
VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable.

I'm guessing I need to find some more codecs, only this time some VFW ones. Any suggestions on which and where to get them? I've never heard of VFW before.

Also, if there are any other programs, I would be glad to hear of them.

"DX50" sure sounds like Divx 5 to me.

Go to http://www.divx.com/ and download Divx 5.03.

Vdub is a great program for doing conversions just like what you want, and if the files are indeed Divx 5, NOTHING will deal with them without the Divx codec installed.

Thanks! Whatever DivX 5.03 had that all the preceding versions didn't did the trick. I can now use those files that I couldn't. Thanks!
