Houston cons: Oni-Con

Post by moonglaive » Tue Sep 17, 2002 12:10 pm

Oni-Con will take place October 22-24, 2004. I know that's kinda far away, but we wanted a lot of time to plan. It will be held at the North Houston Sheraton on JFK Blvd near Intercontinental airport. The website will be at http://www.oni-con.com We currently have Tiffany Grant, Monica Rial, Estevan Olivas, Chris Patton, Michael Coleman, Bruce Lewis, Xero Reynolds, DJ Jinnai, Jase balduf, and Digital Idols coming as American guests. There are several Japanese guests we are talking to as well.

Does anyone have any recommendations or requests for the AMV contest?

Thanks,
Ally Anderson
Con Chairman

I recommend you find someone responsible to run it ASAP, and I recommend that person begins to plan immediately.

I recommend you don't accept submissions in formats you are not guaranteed to play back flawlessly and on the first shot.

I recommend you keep redundant playback equipment and cabling on hand at all times, as something _will_ break or be forgotten.

I recommend you set an early deadline and stick to it firmly.

I recommend you set aside a large room and plan at least two showings, as the event is always popular and not everyone who wants to see it will be able to make the first showing.

I recommend you don't have a contest, but rather have a screening, so that people won't start bitching about rules, and voting, and judging, and qualifying, and prizes, and proxies, and all of the other annoying bullshit that comes up whenever contests are discussed.
"If someone feels the need to 'express' himself or herself with a huge graphical 'singature' that has nothing to do with anything, that person should reevaluate his or her reasons for needing said form of expression, possibly with the help of a licensed mental health practitioner."

I recommend making sure the video room is heavily air-conditioned during any AMV events.
(insert fannishly mangled rap lyric here)

Considering the con is this close and you have no contest setup, a showcase will probably be the better alternative. Next year, put some thought into it the contest and give yourself plenty of time to plan out rules, deadlines and submission formats. I'll try and go if I can sneak out of work. =P

Now that I think about it...Ushicon 2 will only have a showcase since its in Jan. of 2003 which is only a few months away.

Then again we can always fuck around in the panel as well as maybe get a small Iron Chef tourney going

When I saw there was going to be one in Houston I thought it sounded cool and going to the first year of a con is fun cause they are small and you get to meet more people and it is not as smelly
