Why Anime, whats the point?

Post by skanks » Tue Mar 25, 2003 12:42 am

Anime seems pretty broadly defined these days,
why do you like/dislike it?
I mean, what so good about it and what separates it from standard entertainment mediums.

Usually for me it's epic stories. For me (well at least with the animes I like), it's like reading a good book (like Lord of the Rings). I like long epic stories where there are multiple well-developed characters. I also like fantasy (dragons, swords) and sci-fi/mecha, so you put all these together and you get things that are in anime like Escaflowne, Evangelion, etc. This is also a reason I like playing good (which is a rarity these days) RPGs. They are pretty much one in the same to me (in enjoyment).

Also, there are a lot of things that live-action just can't do like mecha, fights and so on.

Don't get me wrong though, I also like a good laugh or romance.

I think for most of us, it's not really that it is anime. Live-action and books can do the exact same thing, but well...based on the things I like, anime generally tends to cater to these things (i.e. geeky :)). Same thing with comedies, I think Kevin Smith movies are hilarious, but so are things like Excel Saga. I think it's just really our universal tastes and finding those things that have them whether it be anime, a book or a movie (shrug).

I really don't know why. Interesting storys and plots? uber cute girls? The fact that tv these days is boring. You know what I like best about anime is that it gets better. You cannot say that about tv. the good stuff on tv americans don't support anyway. How come crap like king of the hill is still on and Family guy is off the air? There are plenty of bad things about anime too. Crossdressers, chicks with dicks, artsy fartsy crap. But its such a big selection that you can avoid those.

for me, it was originally because that's where i could get my fix of feudal Japan (something i was obsessed w/ long before i knew what anime even was). also, because i've lost almost all faith in American media (i do, on the other hand, watch the original Who's Line Is It Anyway? cuz it's British. and they DON'T SUCK)

I like anime because i look at it as a form of art from another culture. Plus they have lots and lots of uber cute women in them. ^-^

It has a lot to do with my love for the Japanese language. I'll be a translator someday, and watching anime DOES help :)

Also, my first anime was Sailor Moon, which is a very emotionally moving series. Ever since then, I love anime that moves me to tears. That feeling of emotional outlet is fantastic.

it's an art from from a forign culture, which i find so much better then western cartoons. All the ones i remember were so terribly predictable, and were jsut the same thing over and over again for 3 about years, then the series retires. Also the way they draw is very different and very interesting. TV today just blows, so i never even bother with that. Plus i've liked anime since i was like 6 and i watched Dragon balls and Samuri pizza cats ... i was always wondering why every thing looked so oriental in that show ... it never phased me at the time that it was because it was from japan ... or some country near it. But for the most part i like anime becasue it's different, and much more interesting then most western entertainment that i've been able to find.

Same reason why I watch/read stuff from other places... I look for things that intrest me... I wouldn't like a anime series just because its anime... I've seen some bad, I've seen some good.
