I think that one really redeming quality of anime is the fact that all the characters even though they may share character traits or style or whatever are original as in they are unique to that anime, they're not like real actors who plays loads of roles yet pretty much stay the same. It's a minor point but an important one. Also because it's animated I feel less of a need to scrutinize, the plots seem far more plausible and of course I like to look at perty things.

Great point! I hate going to cons and seeing people that love ALL anime just because it's anime. Same goes for them liking things that are Japanese. I think these people are retarded.

Also agree with you on your points...was trying to say the same thing, but I used many words :-P. It doesn't have to be anime...hell if there was a ballet that had something of interest to me..I'd go...on second thought maybe not :-P

A Quick OT post...
Thats why I really enjoy the Candian National Expo (AKA CN Comic Book Expo, Sci-Fi Expo, Anime Expo) because the fanboy in me can run wild in all three aspects. I go see some Sci-Fi stars, watch some anime and watch the AMVs and then pick up some comics... a fanboy triliogy!

I think I would get along with you. I am into Sci-fi and comics (J. Michael Straczynski is my hero) as well as anime :-P.

why do you like/dislike it?
I mean, what so good about it and what separates it from standard entertainment mediums.
Usually for me it's epic stories. For me (well at least with the animes I like), it's like reading a good book (like Lord of the Rings). I like long epic stories where there are multiple well-developed characters. I also like fantasy (dragons, swords) and sci-fi/mecha, so you put all these together and you get things that are in anime like Escaflowne, Evangelion, etc. This is also a reason I like playing good (which is a rarity these days) RPGs. They are pretty much one in the same to me (in enjoyment).

Also, there are a lot of things that live-action just can't do like mecha, fights and so on.

Don't get me wrong though, I also like a good laugh or romance.

I think for most of us, it's not really that it is anime. Live-action and books can do the exact same thing, but well...based on the things I like, anime generally tends to cater to these things (i.e. geeky :)). Same thing with comedies, I think Kevin Smith movies are hilarious, but so are things like Excel Saga. I think it's just really our universal tastes and finding those things that have them whether it be anime, a book or a movie (shrug).
ditto :D I agree whole heartedly ... anime isnt necessarily the end all , be all in entertainment.... its just that it can hit on more levels than say a regular tv show, or movie.. their are things you can do in a well animated series that would be close to impossible to do (or as well maybe...) in a modern movie.
...the problem I see a lot is that many good amv makers think they suck, and many bad amv makers think they're good.
I've seen it happen, man! I've SEEN IT!..

I've always like cartoons. Just that simple. I like more mature cartoons now (violence and drama, etc) I started collecting anime when I started collecting my comic books. I don't care for manga though. I'm sure I would, but I have this thing where I don't like to start in the middle of a series and I don't want to back track cause it'd cost too much. I have that same thing with american comics tool. Although I did jump into X-Men and Amazing Spiderman.

And I still like Disney movies, last favorite one was Stitz (sp?) I love that little guy. And my all time fav is Ferngully.

I also miss the kinda movie feel to some of the older cartoons I use to watch that I get in Anime. Or I should say epic feel. Like Batman the cartoon, the first one, was really good. Or Gargolyes (sp?). And they don't do that too often now in American cartoons, espcially since now Anime has become more popular.
