And there's more...
Can't say I blame them, either. I'm thinking twice - three, four times - about flying out to AWA this year. It's not just the security issue, but the overall hassle factor, too. The airlines are laying off by the thousands as well as cancelling numerous flights. The small chance of being stranded is just that much larger. The flights that remain are packed and more likely to be overbooked. Not a pleasant situation.
Cancellations like this will probably impact anime conventions through the end of the year, or at least until the war is over, plus a few (?) months.Posted Mar 30 - Sakura-Con wrote:Due to mostly war concerns, we have had a bit of bad luck. Most of you know that Ishida and Yamamoto were cancelled as per Pioneer. It is with deep regret that Akitaro Daichi, and Atsushi Okuda have cancelled as well. They understand the impact this will have on Sakura Con and send their deepest regrets, however family and work come first. In the past year, I've traveled on planes 3 times, 8 counting each individual flight. Not a single one was on time. And the whole hassle factor were very reminiscent to that of a bus trip I took during which the fricken bus left me.
No, Flying hasn't been pleasant for a long time, and it's getting worse.

I like bugging people. Deal with it.

I wasn't going to mention that, but it's something else to worry about. It's bad enough that the Wall St Journal suggested banning all flights out of mainland China (or some part of it).Hitori wrote:SARS.....
SARS means Sudden Acute Respiratory Syndrome. It's the latest flu virus out of the south China breeding grounds. Highly contagious by air or surface contact (they're not sure) and with a low but significant death rate.
Toronto (where Anime North is held) appears to be the worst spot in North America. Two hospitals were quarantined last I heard, with dozens of people ordered to stay in their homes.
People with flu symptoms have been asked to stay off of airplanes. I suppose that means that if you're on a flight with someone who exhibits those symptoms, you stand a chance of being quarantined for, say, a week. (The incubation period is 2-3 days.)
The world is full of good news these days <sigh>.
Here's a recent BBC article and a SARS FAQ:

I wonder how much these cancelations are due to actual safety concerns and how much of it is that the celebrities don't want to appear insensitive to the war by going about their normal busy. I know that is why the red carpet was canceled for the Oscars, it had nothing to do with safety but with public appearance.
