Okay, how would you handle this?
First: I'm stupid. Stupid, stupid, stupid. There, so no need to flame, I got it.
Okay, I only have Windows movie maker. As best I can tell if I want to use it I need and couple hundred gigs to convert vobs lossless.
If I use lossy, I still can't compress enough with the this editor or with Vdub as far as I can tell.
I have no money for anything, I don't want to steal anything if I can avoid it.
My best guess is I need to some how cherry pick the scenes I want and convert them lossless. Then I try to compress with something after edit.
Is there a better way?

There's a program called MPEG2CUT that I think can help you. It cuts up vob files into sections so you don't have to keep the entire vob files on your computer. Refer to this post:
New tool for people with low disk space
But what you really should be doing, rather than converting the vob files to avi's, is using avisynth. If you can fit all of the vob files themselves on your computer, then this is the way to go. Even if you cut up the vob files with mpeg2cut, you should still be using avisynth. Vob files take up much less space than avi's that are compressed with huffyuv or something. You can find more info on avisynth here.

i'm not sure what you mean
i have the vobs on my hard drive that not the problem.
It when i try to convert to vobs to something I can edit is when the lossless ballons everything, even using a lossy codec I still get something like a couple gigs a movie. I'm using the AMVapp so I think i'm using avisyth, if by that you mean the guide thing where i use it to Vdub the vobs. On the other end I get a 800meg 3 min AMV. And that's lossy.
The problem is I think, that I'm not using premerie.

and remember, u can't import avs files into WMM.
Huffyuv is the lossless codec ur using, rite? if u don't have the hard drive space to encode mass amounts of avi files, u can "cherry pick" the parts u want in VDub. do this by setting the mark in and mark out points located in the VDub menu. they're specifically at the bottom of the program, located to the very right of the controls (they look like black arrows pointing left and right). after finding what scenes u want and setting ur in & out points, Save to AVI using Huffyuv. after ur done saving, use that same avs file to specify other mark in & out points.. and simply repeat.
u should be able to save a couple hundred gigs, depending on how long the scenes u want. if u can't find the "mark in and out points", u can refer to Help - Contents for more info.

yeah, i'm asking if theres a better way than that. I'm not sure what you mean when you say no avs files in WMM, but I've been away for awhile. I'm not sure what mpeg2cut is suppose to do, but the news on that site for 2/22 didn't mention it, so I just googled it. Anyway, IF I'm going to go ahead and cherry pick with lossless will the video compress down better?

what i mean by avs files in WMM is that u can't use them as u would in Adobe Premiere. in Premiere, u can edit avs files just like avi files.. but this funtion isn't available in WMM.
and if ur gonna use the mark in and out points, the only thing it'll do is save u disc space. it won't necessarily compress ur vid "better", but you should definitely be able to cut off a few gigs. i highly suggest using this method..

okay so if i cheery pick lossless I can compress the final product down with less loss data right? so a compressed lossless will be smaller and look better than a lossy compressed?
I need to get the file size down so I can actually send ppl these vids without them sucking so bad...
Here another problem: some of the footage I need is not on dvd. Is there a place I might find some captured footage off a tivo or something?
thanks for the help so far

uhh.. sry i'm kinda confused here. are u asking about getting source footage for ur vidz or making ur vidz smaller in size for distribution of u final vid?
anyways, lossless codecs such as Huffyuv will make ur footage a LOT larger in size than lossy codecs. but they're the best to work in Premiere with, and yes u get the best quality.
and if u need captured footage, u should buy a capture card and capture ur sources on your own.
wait.. are u talking about distributing anime to ur friends??
please clarify as much as possible.. cuz what i'm explaining to u might mess up whatever ur trying to do.

I have amvapp and WMM.
I use guide up to the premiere part and then use my crapware.
I can't lossless an entire film so I lossy it for a couple gig avi.
WMM's compression methods aren't nice. Best quality is 25mb per sec.
I get a 800mb AMV.
Any less and it starts to look like crap, although its still not quite perfect.
I can use a utility to try to compress this but that turns out bad.
We're discussing using a lossless instead and picking the scenes I want ahead of time with the block off option in Vdub.
My question to that is will the larger lossless footage I use in WMM, when I use that dumb program to compress it, not turn to utter crap at the 785 a sec compression rate?
Or can I compress it at 25mb a sec and then compress it again with another untility and not lose as much data as I'm losing doing that with the lossy?
-----------
On an aside, if I is no DvD for some anime I want is there some place or some body that might have aleast a decent downloadable version since A. I'm not buying food much less a vid capture card any time soon. and B. Most of the stuff I can find on DC sucks. I thought maybe other ppl had this problem and someone in the scene had the hook up for some not so crappy video capture or sumthin. I know I'm not suppose to use DL footage but I'm not suppose to use WMM and most of these ppl weren't suppose to gank Premiere, them the breaks I guess...
